Call me a curmudgeon, but if a necessary condition of a specific technology is “kinda-sorta works but only if you have more data than you can feasibly document or understand, horrific amounts of labor exploitation, and ecologically-devastating levels of computational resources”, I would simply choose not to implement that technology #AI #SALAMI #MathyMaths

Just saw the SlackGPT announcement from earlier this month. Aside from being pure #MathyMaths fantasy, the phrase “bringing trusted generative AI to where your team already works” is just incredible. We know we can trust #StochasticParrots because the nice press release said that other people are doing it too!

When I started in #ComputationalLinguistics / #NLProc, some of the stuff with word embeddings and topic modeling felt like kind of a stretch re: what we could do with language models, but at least the formalisms were interesting and it felt like there was an effort to treat it as exploratory and not "hey language models understand language!" Now it feels like the field has been co-opted by all the #MathyMaths and #TESCREAL bullshit, and I so desperately want to get back to real #CompLing

I just read an article about automated #LLM prompt scoring – as in, use #MathyMaths to write a prompt which outputs prompts, and then write another prompt which outputs a score for the prompt which the prompt-outputter had put out.

And like, I don't even know how to react to this. What level of #StochasticParrots hell have we entered? What do we, as a community, think the purpose of evaluation is?

So I just read about people using #LLMs for "synthetic user research", and the thought of people using #MathyMaths to come up with ideas for a product which itself uses #MathyMaths for the design, code, artwork, and implementation, and then validating the idea using fake user research responses output from #StochasticParrots is...pretty fucking bleak even as #AIHype goes
