This is garbage. `uv` is the best tool for the job in the Python ecosystem but it being developed and maintained by a startup (with no path to sustainable funding) this was basically inevitable.

People underestimate the bad position open source is in currently and how much of that space is annexed

Winner's essay, linked in Doctorow's piece, concludes that in some circumstances, products are flexible in the social and political arrangements they afford, and others are not flexible in this regard. Going from there to "those politics are ours to seize and refashion" feels like a pretty fundamental oversimplification
