One thing I particularly hate about synthetic text extruders is their seemingly amazing ability to "square the circle" of impossible briefs that have conflicting requirements, instead of pushing back. We create (learning) experiences that seem to balance the needs of everyone, but once you start looking in a little bit of detail they fall apart under the weight of their contradictions.

AI BOOSTERS: LLMs mean intuitive accessible low barrier plain-language interfaces which will make IDEs obsolete.

ME: OK, whatever. Ill keep using mine, leave me alone.

ME: Wait. Why do we need specialized clients then?

Allez écouter cette conf, elle est très très très bien (en anglais)

And again, from this excellent essay:
"The results, in a strict practical sense, don't matter. What matters is the process of getting them: the development and application of methods, the training of minds, the creation of people who know how to think about hard problems. If you hand that process to a machine, you haven't accelerated science. You've removed the only part of it that anyone actually needed." — Minas Karamanis

The machines are fine. I'm worried about us.

On AI agents, grunt work, and the part of science that isn't replaceable.

I mean YEAH; large language models have a few downsides. Massive resource and environmental concerns. It's pricing people out of the general purpose computers and destroying consumer electronics markets; it's poised to plunge the planet into a global recession; it's also unreliable, often hallucinating/bullshitting and is known to encourage delusional thinking up to and including AI psychosis; and it's largely peddled by fascists.

However, the people who hate on it, are making the critical mistake of labeling it as ALL bad. It's very important we don't undermine the small wedge of utility we could be having with it now.

Look at my specific anecdotal usage of it. How could that be bad? The massive forced capitalistic rollout of it steam rolling over everything cannot be bad in general. The uncritical inclusion of it into everything can't be all bad?

(god damn I hate this line of thinking.)

The Semiotics of Synthetic Media: Production and Meaning in Digital Plastic

Lately I've been digging in to the metaphor of Generative AI content as "digital plastic". I first wrote about it back in 2023 in this article, where I defined the media as a "mass produced, synthetic form of data that like its physical counterpart doesn't degrade much over time" and likened it to the way physical plastic has left its mark on the geological record, suggesting that AI-generated content could leave a similar "layer" in the digital […]

Just musing the on the current #generativeAI shenanigans and the #FSF.

Im more than a bit of a Stallman detractor these days. BUT having followed him for a long time; its almost surprising he hasn't put up a philosophical paper on generative AI on https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/philosophy.html already. OR that the GPLv3 faq hasn't been extended with their notions of how the GPLv3 does or does-not interact with LLM training data, and the resulting LLM. https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html

These things are pressing on the #FLOSS community hard, some leadership is needed. #GNU #LLM #Eliza #StochasticParrots #RMS
