Welcome to the ME/CFS microclots & blood factors study
In this research we are looking at microclots in the plasma of ME/CFS patients and healthy controls. We will also conduct experiments to look at the effect of patient serum on cellular function and metabolism in the lab. This research could identify a diagnostic test for ME/CFS or help us understand the underlying biology of ME/CFS.
We have had a fantastic response to our request for blood samples from the ME community. However, to ensure the quality of our study we still need more healthy controls. We are looking for healthy participants who are over 18, female or were assigned female sex at birth, and available to attend the laboratory in Sheffield during the weeks of February 5th-9th or February 19th-23rd 2024.
Please note, we are looking for healthy controls who are not blood relatives of people with ME.
We are not recruiting any additional ME patients at this time since we have enough ME patients already registered for the study and limited capacity to sample everyone.
To take part we will ask you to:
Read the Participant Information Sheet (10-15 mins, access by clicking the hyperlink)
Fill out a screening questionnaire (~15 mins)
Give consent to participate in the study (5 mins)
Schedule a time to give a blood sample (<5 mins)
Fill out a symptoms questionnaire (~30 mins)
Come to the lab for the blood sample donation (30mins -1h)
*Taking a blood sample will likely only take ~10 minutes but you may wish to rest afterwards or ask the researcher any questions you have about the study.
If you are a person with ME/CFS, please consider asking a friend (not a blood relative) if they can participate as a healthy control. If you are an ME patient who has already donated a blood sample to our study, or you are registered to participate in the upcoming sample collection, please do not invite blood relatives to participate as healthy controls.
We will offer a £25 Love2Shop voucher for each participant who provides a blood sample.
