It’s an interesting counter-proposal to #MAiD as #eugenics though
Cause it’s being offered in #Canada where services aren’t available and people are taking #MAiDinCanada clearly stating it’s a last resort for lack of a better option
So be careful what we ask for
Assisted suicide may be a solution for some, but drag other disabled people down against their will
As for question one, #disabled people here in #Canada have already been encouraged to kill themselves in the most aggressive #euthanasia program in the world

They ask for specific assistance, it is denied. They are offered euthanasia instead

We are not discussing terminally ill patients
We’re discussing disabled people, who in Canada now have less right to life supports and suicide prevention than non-disabled people
Because I am disabled if I ask for medical assistance in dying, there is a process to “support” me by doing that
If I was non-disabled and asked for support in dying, they would send me to suicide prevention
Some lives in Canada are worth more than others

My friend @mssinenomine talks about the difference in #Canada was that the #DisabilityRights movement here got derailed by a couple of big one-person fund-raising campaigns for “cures” that basically derailed Activist struggles for legal rights
So people in the US won the Americans with Disabilities Act
And we only get wheelchair ramps if the builder here is following guidelines from the States

Some of the ways #MAiD is applied in Canada are moral, and some of them are utterly immoral
Canadians have trouble hearing both of those are true at the same time
Canada has the least restricted access to assisted suicide in the world
We need more consideration for the immoral parts of our system right now

I moved from the US to Canada in 2005 (family), and there’s a lot that needs to be done in both countries, so crossing the border is no solution
Canada treats indigenous people very badly, disability rights here are less protected than the States #MAiDinCanada etc
And Canada’s healthcare system is in serious danger of being dismantled by austerity and privatization
So think about moving if you want, but the work needs doing everywhere
