Sundial Lupine (Lupinus perennis) is the only lupine native to Eastern North America. It is the larval host plant for the endangered Karner Blue butterfly (Plebejus melissa samuelis).

The lupine often associated with Maine and the Canadian Maritimes is a Pacific Northwest species (Lupinus polyphyllus) and considered an invasive in the east.

The federally endangered Karner Blue Butterfly (Plebejus melissa samuelis).

The caterpillars are specialists, relying on a single species of lupine ((Lupinus perennis) as a food source.

I stand waist deep in a wide expanse of blue lupines. It is the Mary's River Natural Area park, an experiment in returning cultivated rye grass and cattle pastures back into the native oak savanna.

A rare return to how it looked when the Kalapuya natives called this land home.

My own home is on an isolated ox-bow bend between the park and the river.
