One of the talk shows that I listen to has recently brought up the topic of loquats because one of them just planted a tree, and none of the other people, co-hosts or guests, know what it is.

I'm very familiar with it because we had trees in the front and back yard when I was a kid, and the fruit was plentiful. Not too sweet, good texture on the skin and meat of the fruit. Fairly large seeds.

I feel like I don't ever see them in stores. #loquat #loquats #fruit

Loquat - Wikipedia

Today's adventures in #food #preservation: 13 half-pint jars of #loquat #jam, eight with chardonnay and five with riesling. The former is what "chard" stands for on the labels. I am the first to admit that loquat jam with actual chard would be nasty.

Here's the thing about loquats, in case anyone's interested: they're a real pain in the ass. On the plus side, they're delicious, but on the minus side, they're very small, they have to be peeled, and each fruit is about 85% pit. It takes a looooong time to process enough to be useful for #canning. Lucky for me, my wife has seemingly endless patience for food-prep projects as long as she can watch either "Great British Baking Show" or "Outlander" while doing them. She's completely caught up on GBBS at this point, but she has two seasons of "Outlander" to go, which she's saving for the feijoas (aka pineapple guavas) that will be ripening in a month or so.

It's late at night... but this year's first loquat!

It was a little small but delicious with a gentle sweetness😋
It was completely different from the loquat jelly I had a while ago😫

Anyway, Good Night💤

My #chayote #choko was doing so well… then we had a very windy night.

All its huge green leaves shrivelled & died within a day of the winds.

It’s attempt at using my #Loquat as a trellis all came to nothing.😢

I then threw some “Black #Nasturtium” seeds into the pot. Very different coloured leaves! #gardening

I’ve abandoned the house, with it’s 30° Celsius #temperature, for a cooler (26°) patio.

I notice that the #choko has reached a position just below the top of our 2 metre tall #loquat.

Another choko that I’d written off months ago as “dead” has sprung into life too. Much smaller growth on it, but looking good.

#choko update…

It is still going strong & is working it’s way up my useless #loquat tree.
