One of the talk shows that I listen to has recently brought up the topic of loquats because one of them just planted a tree, and none of the other people, co-hosts or guests, know what it is.
I'm very familiar with it because we had trees in the front and back yard when I was a kid, and the fruit was plentiful. Not too sweet, good texture on the skin and meat of the fruit. Fairly large seeds.
I feel like I don't ever see them in stores. #loquat #loquats #fruit
Last summer my S.E. Asian housemate showed me how loquats could be picked like bunches of grapes - cut off the stem that bears the bunch.
Amd then I saw what happened to all the unpicked loquats - how they stayed on the tree, bred fruitfly and provided a perfect site for a fungal disease that looks like anthracnose.
This summer I'm picking all the bunches to see if the tree gets infections.
Also opened the centre of the canopy to make a vase shape for sun and air.

What are they? Alameda residents have most likely seen these little gems growing in yards throughout the area. Health Coach Denise Lum shares the awesome health benefits of these fruits that pack a punch.

These balcony loquats have somehow made it past the birds. I don't think they realise the tree is here yet. Anyway, I will absolutely eat all of these in one sitting.
Anyway, this tree grew from a seed over a decade ago and has only been giving me fruit the last few years. It was worth the wait!
