@F3715H @GhostOnTheHalfShell agreed.

This entire #rant shouldn't exist.

It should be with #screenings like with #music in a #club:

  • You fill out a form
  • Get a quote by the licensing / collecting agency
  • You pay it
  • You get a reciept
    • If someone from said collecting agency ever shows up (which they almost never do at licensed events & -locations) you can just show them that and they'll wish you a nice day.

It's not a question that you want to properly #license that stuff…

  • But there isn't even like an agency / #licensing brokerage one can just contact, maybe pay a premium percentage on top of the fees and have them work out who to pay and how much.

If you haven't seen it, MalusCorp is a wonderfully dark satire that feels only a year from becoming reality.

It poses a company who's sole purpose is to use AI to effectively crush #opensource #software #licensing and development. While it intends to be a exaggerated take on the anti-OS stance of some organizations, it might actually stray too close to reality and become a blueprint for a future business model...

@kkarhan @GhostOnTheHalfShell I'd happily pay €100 for a #DRM-free (or at least non - #RegionLock'd #bluray copy of #CyberSix (or even just a legal copy of the files)...

- I'd even want to properly #license a #WatchParty because I do think that those that worked on it should get (at least on paper) their residuals (even if it may just be a few cents out of hundreds if not thousands of Euros in #licensing)...

Like it's really frustrating when being honest is punished!

The big difference re: #music is that unlike #movies or a series, is that #licensing, even for #commercial use, is relatively straight-forward.

"[...] In order to qualify, you MUST NOT charge admission for screenings. (If the screenings are part of a broader event, such as a convention, there must not be a separate fee for the screening.)
Film theaters wishing to offer a separate ticketed event should get in touch via the general contact form.
In the vast majority of cases, we can only grant permission within the United States and Canada. [...]"

I guess I need to find local leads re: #licensing.

While competitors like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are spending billions on AI infrastructure, #Apple has taken a different approach. By #licensing #AImodels and leveraging its existing user base of 2 billion devices, Apple is able to implement #distributedAI without the massive #capitalexpenditure. This strategy allows Apple to focus on owning the customer experience. https://asymco.com/2026/03/10/the-most-brilliant-move-in-corporate-history/?eicker.news #tech #media #news
