There's a site called "Is it really FOSS?" that evaluates projects to see if they're as free and open source as advertised. It's important this kind of work because software makers can convince us their products are free software, where in fact they are not, or have some considerations to make.

Why genAI means the end of copyright for software and the re-invention of open source

Most of the discussions about the impact of the latest generative AI systems on copyright have centred on text, images and video. That’s no surprise, since writers, artists and film-makers feel very strongly about their creations, and members of the public can relate easily to the issues that AI raises for this kind of creativity. But there’s another creative domain that has been massively […]

Yep, Composer 2 started from an open-source base! We will do full pretraining in the future.

Only ~1/4 of the compute spent on the final model came from the base, the rest is from our training. This is why evals are very different.

And yes, we are following the license through our inference partner terms.

@F3715H @GhostOnTheHalfShell agreed.

This entire #rant shouldn't exist.

It should be with #screenings like with #music in a #club:

  • You fill out a form
  • Get a quote by the licensing / collecting agency
  • You pay it
  • You get a reciept
    • If someone from said collecting agency ever shows up (which they almost never do at licensed events & -locations) you can just show them that and they'll wish you a nice day.

It's not a question that you want to properly #license that stuff…

  • But there isn't even like an agency / #licensing brokerage one can just contact, maybe pay a premium percentage on top of the fees and have them work out who to pay and how much.

If you haven't seen it, MalusCorp is a wonderfully dark satire that feels only a year from becoming reality.

It poses a company who's sole purpose is to use AI to effectively crush #opensource #software #licensing and development. While it intends to be a exaggerated take on the anti-OS stance of some organizations, it might actually stray too close to reality and become a blueprint for a future business model...

@kkarhan @GhostOnTheHalfShell I'd happily pay €100 for a #DRM-free (or at least non - #RegionLock'd #bluray copy of #CyberSix (or even just a legal copy of the files)...

- I'd even want to properly #license a #WatchParty because I do think that those that worked on it should get (at least on paper) their residuals (even if it may just be a few cents out of hundreds if not thousands of Euros in #licensing)...

Like it's really frustrating when being honest is punished!

The big difference re: #music is that unlike #movies or a series, is that #licensing, even for #commercial use, is relatively straight-forward.

Film theaters wishing to offer a separate ticketed event should get in touch via the general contact form.

I guess I need to find local leads re: #licensing.
