Somewhere in the middle of America… there are still whispers about a hidden government cannabis forest planted decades ago and forgotten by time. Old hippies called it “the garden.” Most people thought it was just another Kansas story. Maybe it wasn’t. 🌲🍂🌿 #Kansas #CannabisHistory

#Abolitionist Senator #CharlesSumner gave a powerful speech on #ThisDayInHistory in 1856, insisting that #Kansas should be admitted to the Union as a free state and arguing that #slavery be abolished. Two days later he was nearly killed on the Senate floor by a #SouthernDemocrat.

I've been without #power since just before 9pm yesterday evening.

As usual, the power went out well before the rain and wind hit all that hard.

I always say "they" keep our lines going with tinfoil and squirrel spit because the slightest breeze means the power will go out here for hours at a time.

I figure it just presages the future, honestly. Service is just going to get crappier and more expensive, and the ability to maintain lines really won't be the focus of any of the energy companies because they have to make profits for their shareholders rather than serve their customers well, and I'll have to fend for myself just like I'm doing right now.

I plugged my router and my bedroom fan into a power bank shortly after the outage so I could keep watching weather coverage and stay somewhat cool (it was 85°F here yesterday and quite humid because of the storms).

That was around 9pm, and it's 2am now. I just now got up and dragged my largest battery bank out from storage to hook up the fridge and freezer.

We are often the last area to get repairs done because we are poors and thus lowest priority, so I am glad I had the foresight to acquire various battery banks over the last 3-4 years (I am still paying the big one off).

I've never had to use the large one until now! I figured if it is five hours in and we were still dark, I should go ahead and plug the fridge and freezer in so I don't have to worry about losing food later today. I honestly don't have time to deal with losing food. That's just the facts.

This is all a good test of how much capacity the various power banks have. My "new" fridge was still holding at 0°F/37°F when I plugged it in, too, so that's very heartening.

I'll bet the CEO of #Evergy, who last time I checked, made over $8 million in compensation each year, didn't lose power during this storm -- or if he did, it was brief (and he probably has a Generac). I bet he and his family are sleeping just fine tonight their his gold-plated mansion or whatever.

Today is a high-risk weather day here, level 4 (out of 5). Later this afternoon through late tonight. 🌪️

Last night we had some impressive storms. No tornadoes, just lots of heavy rain, lightning, and thunder.

Today will be the tornado and damaging winds risk. Too bad the sun has come out, that lets it warm up more and enhances conditions for it.
