Singer-songwriter Joy Crookes is one of the prominent names in the generation of neo soul artists who began to emerge in the late '10s and the early '20s, and still enjoying their resurgence. After an initial set of EPs, she expanded the scope of her sound beginning with her 2022 album, Skin, to bring in more retro soul feel to her music, along with some of the orchestral mid-century pop elements with their jazzy undertones (even a bit of occasional trip-hop), while maintaining contemporary pop textures. She is an effective lyricist who imbues her songs with pieces of candid storytelling and emotional openness that adds more weight to her romantic ballads.
