I like Wroclaw main station (first among best small train stations and second overall) but the ranking should also include intermodality options like access to secure bicycle parking. What are your thoughts ? Cc @jon @cycling_on_rails

European Railway Station Index 2025

Challenging times reveal which stations can adapt and which continue to struggle. This year’s index highlights both resilience and decline across Europe’s busiest hubs. Zurich Main Station once again…

Another type of 🚈+🚲 #intermodality is that in which the bicycle is parked in the station for the trip before or after the train/bus. To optimise this combination, several types of bicycle parking are needed,e.g. (un)covered, but wall loops are never a good choice. The(simultaneuos)pictures show two bicycle parkings next to a Cartagenas train&bus station. One is composed of wall loops, meanwhile the other one is composed of stands. The later is nearly full while the first is empty...

And of course I will be finishing this journey the same way I started it - on two wheels.

I had an interesting discussion with @jon yesterday at #velocity2025 about bikes, trains and bikes on trains. Among other topics we discussed the pros and cons of obligatory bike place reservations: cost, flexibility, predictability, paranoid security concerns, bike place design, abusive booking of unneeded places etc. It's a complex issue and there does not seem to be yes or no answer.

#bikes #trains #intermodality

The kind of 🚲+🚈 #intermodality in which one travels in the train with the 🚲 requires a comfortable access to stations and tracks with the bicycles. For this, elevators are needed (and they are a must for #accessibility), but also a comfortable access for the bikes through the stairs. In #Denmark, almost all train stations have these bicycle stairs. Such access ramps allow going up & down with the bike without bearing it.

#Intermodality extends the range (km, issues solving, or special cases) of use of bicycles. 1 key is to allowing people to travel with the bicycles in public transport. #Copenhagen does it quite well: it can be perfectly designed and optimized like in the S-train picture example, but also in simpler ways like shown in the bus or metro pictures. It is also possible in Harbour bus or regional/long distance trains.

#Renfe's new rules for Renfe AM (aka FEVE) make intermodality unfeasible:
-During rush hours no bicycles: intermodality not to commute.
-Out of rush hours: Only 1bicycle. As no booking is possible you depend on being lucky. You may have to get rid of the bicycle in your way back

Government must take action for the more Renfe speaks about #intermodality the worse it really does #SustainableMobility
