From @phannam in the Guardian. on the attempt for an Australian longterm #weather #forecast . With #ElNino on its way out, #LaNina might knock at the door which would be a first since observations. But the IOD #IndianOceanDipole also plays a big role in #Ausweather, as do the spiking ocean surface temperatures, and the global weirding as background music. In the Black Summer 2019/2020, #ENSO was neutral-ish but a dry IOD caused the enormous bushfires. What the already now evolving dry IOD does to a normally wet LaNina that might or might not evolve, is unknown as yet. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/apr/21/el-nino-weather-pattern-over-australia-la-nina
The El Niño has ended. Will Australia get a La Niña next – and what weather could that bring?

Our climate is influenced not just by Pacific weather patterns but by the Indian and Southern oceans, as well as global heating trends

The Guardian
We find a predominant role of the tropical Pacific (linked to #ENSO) but also another important region over the west Pacific, possibly linked to the #IndianOceanDipole and the #SouthernAnnularMode. These modes have been recently linked to e.g. fires in Australia.
Model suggests Indian Ocean Dipole changes are reducing wheat yields in Australia

A team of researchers affiliated with multiple institutions in China and Australia attributes reduced rainfall on Australian wheat fields to disruptions to the Indian Ocean Dipole due to climate change. The study is published in Nature Food.
