Antarctic heat, wild Australian winter: what’s happening to the weather and what it means for the rest of the year

Something extraordinary is happening above Antarctica, and it might bring unusual weather to the southern hemisphere for months to come.

The Conversation

"We find no evidence for a forced response in SAM variability prior to the 20th century. We do find the modern positive trend falls outside the 2σ range of the prior 2000 years at multidecadal time scales, supporting the inference that the SAM’s positive trend over the last several decades is a response to anthropogenic climate change."

With plausible knock-on effects, of course.

Trends and variability in the Southern Annular Mode over the Common Era - Nature Communications

This study uses data assimilation to reconstruct the Southern Annular Mode over the last 2000 years. The authors find that the mode’s history reflects natural climate variability, except for the most-recent positive trend

We find a predominant role of the tropical Pacific (linked to #ENSO) but also another important region over the west Pacific, possibly linked to the #IndianOceanDipole and the #SouthernAnnularMode. These modes have been recently linked to e.g. fires in Australia.
