Meshtastic, APRS, D-Star, QDX and getting back into radio

Ham radio is a cyclical hobby for me, and when the interest comes it comes fast and strong. And so it did several weeks ago…

It started with a trip to Wabeno, WI to help support the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders annual Ride 4 Research. It’s a dual-sport motorcycle event held in the backwoods, where there is very spotty cell coverage. It’s one of the only (maybe the only) events of it’s […]

A mobile rig would make the most sense for the event, but HTs are cheaper and more versatile. Icom ID-50 or ID-5100? #hamradio #amateurradio #dstar #icom #id50a #id5100

I've had a fun day with ham radio today:

* change some settings on my ID-5100A for a few frequencies, #ID5100
* signed up for #NXDN
* configured my #WPSD hotspot to use #DMR 2 NXDN cross mode
* figured out #DroidStar on my #Android (to connect to NXDN)

I'm still working on:
* reducing #RFI coming in to shack, that seems to only be interfering with my space heater lol (need more ferrite chokes, maybe)
* make a few more contacts on HF today

I'm glad I found a day to spend doing HamRadio stuffs

Here's a look at something that I created in 2021 when I had energy to burn on pandemic projects - setting up an #Icom #ID5100, a #RaspberryPi, and a #BioEnno battery in a #HarborFreight ammo can.

I designed and 3D printed a frame assembly that houses the radio body, a Pi Zero W, a watt meter, BioEnno battery, antenna, charging cables, headset, handheld mic, and all the associated shovels, rakes, and implements of destruction.

This year I'd like to do something similar for my #Yaesu #FT891
