I’m a Ceraunophile, but the foster kitten is definitely not. Vancouver had eight thunderclaps on Tuesday night. It was exhilarating for me, but it sent her straight under the bed. When another clap happened this morning, she was scared all over again.
I spent the morning soothing her and showing her she was safe. It’s a good reminder that fear usually comes from things we don't understand. To her, the thunder is a scary threat. To me, it’s just a "sonic boom" caused by air expanding.
Understanding the "why" behind the noise changed my whole experience. I’m happy to say she is finally out from under the bed today. It’s a small win for her nervous system.
When we understand how our own systems work, we don't have to hide from the "thunder" in our lives. We can learn to regulate and stay grounded instead.
