How do you find the bookreading community here? Is this a friendlier forum than Twitter? Lately I've been reading articles and book chapters of interest over complete books, which I supposed might seem unusual. (I get into group discussions, and look for sources and info related to the topics.)
my book interests are #sciencefiction #Judaica #Bible #philosophy #Heschel #vegetarian and #pescetarian #cookbooks, and #nonfiction books on modern society & #socialissues
This Abraham Joshua Heschel quote is from "God In Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism"
Abraham Joshua Heschel was one of the most revered religious leaders of the 20th century, and God in Search of Man and its companion volume, Man Is Not Alone, two of his most important books, are classics of modern Jewish theology. God in Search of Man combines scholarship with lucidity, reverence, and compassion as Dr. Heschel discusses not man's search for God but God's for man--the notion of a Chosen People, an idea which, he writes, "signifies not a quality inherent in the people but a relationship between the people and God." It is an extraordinary description of the nature of Biblical thought, and how that thought becomes faith.
Abraham Joshua Heschel -
To maintain that the essence of Judaism consists exclusively of halacha is as erroneous as to maintain that the essence of Judaism consists exclusively of agada.
The interrelationship of halacha and agada is the very heart of Judaism.
Halacha represents the strength to shape one's life according to a fixed pattern; it is a form-giving force. Agada is the expression of man's ceaseless striving which often defies all limitations.
I'm reading more chassidus these days. Why? I appreciate academic studies of Judaism. But when I read non-Orthodox #Torah commentary I usually only learn facts. In most cases, the authors do little to encourage one's Avodat Hashem or Yirat Shamayim, spiritual values which are the essence of a living faith. (There are exceptions, obviously, A. J. #Heschel, #ShaiHeld, etc.)
This quote explains the idea further
