In all of these years no-one on #IMDB has spotted the Hays Code circumventing appearance of the Eiffel Tower, with the camera tracking downwards, in place of the 'Parcheesi' in Paris When It Sizzles.

The fact that William Holden's 'whisky' is very clearly plain water, not even coloured for effect, is probably a combination of suspension of disbelief and (if one knows about Holden) too obvious to be worth mentioning.

It's a shame that none of the stars could pronounce 'Gillette' correctly (as either English or French) and that 1960s audiences weren't given the native name of the #ArcDeTriomphe.

I’m sure Hays loved this movie.

A woman falls in love with two men, so they all live together? Where man has sex with a laundry woman so he can have a clean shirt for a date with someone else? Pretty wild for 1933.

Will Hays had nothing to do with this move. He never starred in a movie. He never wrote, directed, or produced a movie. He was a politician and chairman of the Republican National Committee before becoming the first chairman of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America. He’s best remembered for the Hays Code, a set of moral rules that films were required to follow. I thought there could be no better way to celebrate him than to watch a film that gleefully breaks a bunch of those rules.

Lucky for us, the Hays Code was abandoned, and no Republicans ever try to censor any one any more.

Wonder Bar (1934) starring Al Jolson, May Francis + Dolores Del Rio was a pre-code film released just before the Motion Picture Production Code censorship guidelines (known as the Hays Code) were adaped more rigorously. This scene in particular is often sited as an example of the 'Pansy Craze' - a term coined in 1994 - referring to a period in the late 1920s + early 30s when homosexual visibility in stage + film was increasing.
