My main server now has two #Toshiba hard drives. I have no idea why they are so unpopular in the #selfhosting community when they are cheap, quiet, and reliable. I suppose #WD and #Seagate have good marketing departments.

Ars Technica: Websites have a new way to spy on visitors: Analyzing their SSD activity. “Now sites have a new way to spy on their visitors: measuring subtle interactions with their solid-state drives. The technique, named FROST (fingerprinting remotely using OPFS-based SSD timing), allows sites to monitor other sites a visitor is viewing and what apps are open on their devices.”

Thinking about getting a hard drive dedicated for the purpose of off-site backup, encrypting it, and then opening a safety deposit box at the bank and keeping it there except to update said backup.  Thoughts?  I'm on NixOS, if that matters.
