On top of all of the relics and ancient structures that we had available to loot and plunder, we did have a few lesser custom items available, one of which was the Ascend ability from Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It worked almost identically, too! We didn't really get the opportunity to really test them out during our runs, sadly, and datapack MCFunction updates have since made the implementation a bit hairy to update, but it was such a neat little thing we got to try out!

One other thing that I've been making use of this season was the trailer for the first season being used as a transition from the start of the streams into the actual gameplay, which acted both as an intro sequence as well as a way to hide myself actually navigating the main menu and logging into the server for the day. It honestly worked out quite well for what it needed to do!

Nowadays my stream layout has each of these cards simply blur the gameplay footage to not only give it a nice clean aesthetic, but to also obfuscate any administrative tasks that would otherwise be left onscreen, such as logging into a game, server, etc. Having a longer stinger animation like this, though, really ties in the whole thing and really helped it feel like an event, and not just some rando streaming on Twitch... Wait...

What I do find interesting now in the years since we did both of these seasons, is just how much more efficient some of these farms are that don't require putting yourself in danger just to collect.

Allays being hit with the new splash potions creating slimes that create silverfish that die to poison to create webs or turn to skulk, or just drop tons of experience orbs.

Villagers being used for trades isn't new, but their refinements make working with them much more consistent.

The game has added so many new ways to acquire resources that at some point the risk involved in farming drops. Granted, acquiring Allays and adventuring out to collect villagers, exploring the Nether, all stuff that incurs risk even with all of these improvements, but the farms themselves are much more safe nowadays.

As with the first season, I tried out several different clientside mods, including Distant Horizons at some point, which did cause issues since the chunk cache stuck around between runs (which I did work around on my own), which had varying degrees of success towards adding a bit of visual flare and polish to the whole experience. I tried using shaders, especially those with PBR rendering techniques, but they were too taxing when combined with OBS and streaming the whole thing live on Twitch.

We eventually settled on a vanilla++ style setup in the end, similar to the first season's compass-gives-minimap and clock-gives-time HUD additions, but with the new resource pack improvements made since then, we had much more to work with this time around.

Whoo, almost missed today's VOD post! Haven't missed one since we started and I don't intend to now!

One thing I never intended on even attempting this season was actually building some of the higher tier mob farms, such as the raid farms and golem farms (since handling them went so well last season) especially since we never really needed them? Honestly though once we figured out how to get them set up safely it was just a matter of having someone tasked with doing them, then we were set getting through the early game. It turned our original loop of finding a skeleton spawner and building a farm out of it to slowly grind for exp to grind enchantments into just trading for our gear, food, everything.

Hopefully with the villager trade balancing that has happened in versions since, getting set up will require a few outposts or much more organized planning next time around...

I feel like this season lasted quite a bit longer than the first time around, while at the same time we didn't accomplish the same heights as defeating the dragon for the first time.

Don't get me wrong, we beat the dragon again, and it was just as fun this time around, but knowing that was only about half of the intended goal meant we had much more to do, with much more opportunities to end the world and have to start over.

The death tallies this time around were much more even-split, and the causes of death much more interesting. I'm just glad I totally never did us in by an enderman this time around; nope, never.

The other new additions to this season, the relics, are less tied to our members strictly speaking, but are moreso just neat custom items that we were able to create for this season to give players a reward for venturing out in search of treasure. @Metal_Link got the Master Sword, with full hearts magic swirl attack and all. @nincodedo got a fishing rod with double the loot rate. Tunasz got a bow that fires torches. I got a pair of daggers that, when dual-wielded, gave me extra damage and allowed me to sneak attack mobs, oh and a leather helmet that gave me night vision, mostly because I was the one who streamed live, but also because typical rogueish nonsense.

Between the random dungeons and the ancient artifacts, this season was much more of a roguelike than an ironman challenge

One neat little fun fact about the random OCW structures is that every one of them were originally built by one of our members in a previous Minecraft Server. Some of them date all the way back to alpha/beta Minecraft, even! One of them was unfinished, and @nincodedo and I had plans to make it into a randomized dungeon of sorts? We took pieces of our favorite base we ever built and tried to use the new-at-the-time structure puzzle pieces to randomize it for each instance. While we haven't finished it yet, a more important structure has, The Library.

In each player's structure, they have a chance to find their own relic, but in The Library, any/all relics can be found. Once a specific relic is found, no other copies will generate in any other lootable container, making them wholly unique per attempt. No, we did not keep these upon death, although we did toss around some sort of rare enchantment using Curse of Binding II+ that would basically persist after death for each level beyond 1, but would come pre-equipped and unable to be removed for the duration.

So many neat new roguelike mechanics this season! Legitimately one of my favorite improvements we made to the whole thing.
