The other new additions to this season, the relics, are less tied to our members strictly speaking, but are moreso just neat custom items that we were able to create for this season to give players a reward for venturing out in search of treasure. @Metal_Link got the Master Sword, with full hearts magic swirl attack and all. @nincodedo got a fishing rod with double the loot rate. Tunasz got a bow that fires torches. I got a pair of daggers that, when dual-wielded, gave me extra damage and allowed me to sneak attack mobs, oh and a leather helmet that gave me night vision, mostly because I was the one who streamed live, but also because typical rogueish nonsense.

Between the random dungeons and the ancient artifacts, this season was much more of a roguelike than an ironman challenge

One neat little fun fact about the random OCW structures is that every one of them were originally built by one of our members in a previous Minecraft Server. Some of them date all the way back to alpha/beta Minecraft, even! One of them was unfinished, and @nincodedo and I had plans to make it into a randomized dungeon of sorts? We took pieces of our favorite base we ever built and tried to use the new-at-the-time structure puzzle pieces to randomize it for each instance. While we haven't finished it yet, a more important structure has, The Library.

In each player's structure, they have a chance to find their own relic, but in The Library, any/all relics can be found. Once a specific relic is found, no other copies will generate in any other lootable container, making them wholly unique per attempt. No, we did not keep these upon death, although we did toss around some sort of rare enchantment using Curse of Binding II+ that would basically persist after death for each level beyond 1, but would come pre-equipped and unable to be removed for the duration.

So many neat new roguelike mechanics this season! Legitimately one of my favorite improvements we made to the whole thing.

On the one hand, I miss the simpler times of season one's attempts, the more varied strategies and starting conditions from when we didn't have anything established. On the other hand, having a consistent strategy that has proven fruitful is nice when having everyone survive is critical.

There's also something to be said being able to have a bunch of automated villager farms, iron farms, enchanted gear, food, etc. so quickly after a reset. As much as I prefer to play survival with a focus on aesthetics, I'm also much more of a utilitarian player and my worlds always reflect that lack of whimsy. My modded playthrough delving well into lawnbase territory.

We're not here to make pretty bases, we're here to survive. Exploit whatever resources we can in order to do so, our lives are the only ones that matter when ending any of them dooms the world entirely to the void.

The biggest change outside of the data pack itself for this season was the inclusion of some new faces, as well as the shift towards meta-gaming our early phase plans.

Last time around we just kinda found a place to settle down and hoped for the best. Once we got settled in and got some food and resources/equipment sorted, we would generally go exploring for various biome-specific blocks/items, such as bamboo or dyes. This time around? Find a village asap and lock away every villager until we figure out how to survive. Then it was a matter of time before we were trading them their own resources for tools, food, and even enchanted books. No more need for mob farms or spawners or none of that.

Thematically it separates the two seasons, but I'm still unsure which of the two I prefer...

Happy Friday! We've got more Shared Hardcore coming your way, just in time for the weekend!

I think my favorite change we made this season was the karma system. Doing more things during your current attempt will reward you, but not until you fail. This mostly resulted in some nice Day 1 rewards, such as some food, armor, or even randomly enchanted gold tools with a custom Curse of Vanishing II, which only gave you one in-game day to use them before they vanished.

All of these were to basically cut down on the grind of starting new runs right after losing a run where everyone did well, while also discouraging us from immediately jumping into lava because we spawned on a deserted island with no resources.

This sort of delayed gratification system was really fascinating to me, as you're encouraged to do well, but only insofar as reducing the punishment of failing. Do well enough and you shouldn't fail in the first place, though; I hear you saying. That's honestly what made the system so fascinating to me. It serves its purpose well since we knew we were going to slip up (and we did so, often) so the caveat was never an issue. The only times where it was rough was when we'd fail a few times in a row, causing us to not receive anything due to not earning any achievements.

Oh boy, here we go again! It's time for Season Two of attempting to beat Hardcore Minecraft on a singular shared life! This season though, we're not content with just defeating The Enderdragon, oh no. This season we hope to also defeat The Wither!

This was also after the point where the Caves & Cliffs update was released, so the Deep Dark is also a thing, which does include Wardens, so that'll be fun! There's also been plenty of new updates to the data pack and server plugins to provide some neat new mechanics for us, including a karma-like reward system and unique structures containing ancient artifacts for us to find and use!

Today's VOD is the kick-off stream to what I expect will be quite an entertaining season!
