A word or two abt Gypsy Jazz in the #EU - In the U.S., we often presume that jazz is entirely an American invention. Not true. If jazz is defined as a largely unstructured & spontaneous musical conversation around a central melodic theme, then Gypsies have been making jazz for centuries. That makes sense when one appreciates the hardwired Zeitgeist of Gypsy #music, which requires each performance of a tune to reflect the moment, the instrumentalists involved and the emotional context of the experience.

The French Manuche and the Dutch/German Scinti clans of Gypsies had a significant impact on the world of Jazz. Guitarist Django Reinhardt and fiddle player Stephan Grapelli, with his famously flaming fingers, epitomize the fusion of Gypsy traditions with jazz. Django's lead riffs and instrumental ornamentations defined "cool jazz" in Paris during the 30s and 40s.

I penned an essay about #GypsyMusic that makes a case for attributing musical improvisation to #Gypsy clans. #Roma

#ethnomusicology is a hobby of mine, so I end up sampling and studying a bunch of different styles of #music - a delightful pastime I must say. One of the musical genres I follow closely and am personally fascinated with is #GypsyMusic. So I wrote a thing about the musical traditions and practices of the #Roma, #Scinti and #Romani clans. In the piece, I argue that we owe much of musical improvisation to the contributions of #Gypsy bands over the years. https://charliemchenry.medium.com/does-musical-improvisation-begin-with-the-gypsies-eed512868df2
Does Musical Improvisation Begin With The Gypsies? - Charlie McHenry - Medium

In 1859, noted Hungarian composer and musicologist Ferenc Liszt published a book in which he stated unequivocally that all Hungarian music had Gypsy (Romani or Roma as they preferred to be called)…

So how about some #GypsyMusic for a Sunday night? The Roma and Scinti people produce some of the planet’s greatest music, and it makes sense when you think about it. The Roma tribes started in India, then migrated across Central Asia, North Africa, the Middle East and finally into Europe. In the process, their music became a rich tapestry of what they brought with them combined with what they encountered along the way. The tunes on this music video playlist are energetic, sometimes brassy, and in the case of the French Manouche tradition, very cool jazz by the likes of Django. I like it all, but especially the brassy and joyful Balkan sound. Because the Roma have long been persecuted, there are also some songs of pain, grief and defiance. Musically, it’s all good. #music #Roma #Scinti #GypsyJazz #musicvideo #playlist https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL77954DAEE722A285
Gypsy Roma

All things Gypsy, Roma & Gitano. French Manouche cool jazz, Balkan trumpet, Spanish Flamenco, Rajastani dance. I am truly a Gadjo Dilo, but I love Gypsy music.
