The understanding of antisemitism in the broader context of racialisation and racial eugenics against systematically dehumanized groups of people will also enable us to more often account for the Shoah together with the simultaneously perpetrated Romani Holocaust, and their devastating impact.

The harmful legacy of the Romani Holocaust is currently under-accounted for in Holocaust research, while the concerns of anti-Roma racism remain pressing, given that the Roma remain one of Europe’s most racially oppressed and stigmatised populations (Berkyová 2017; Kóczé and Rövid 2017; MIA 2024).

When the International Day of the Roma People was proclaimed: a people without a state who has never armed an army.

April 8, 1971, London. For the first time, Roma, Sinti, Manush, Kale and Romanichal — while still in many European states, Roma women were sterilized as part of eugenics policies that had not yet ceased despite the genocide they had suffered — came together in a political assembly, created the Romani Union, proclaimed that the Roma are a transnational people, a nation without a state, raised the Romani flag and sang for the first time the Djelem Djelem anthem. In 1979, the United Nations recognizes the Romani Union and proclaims April 8th International Romani People’s Day.

Today, after 55 years from that day, the anniversary is “celebrated” — by few. But there is little to celebrate. There is to acknowledge not only that the Roma and Sinti are still today the most discriminated, hated and abused people in Europe, but also that the whole world has fallen back into a madness of wars and genocides. Today we remember that first meeting and the duty to fight against the oppression that still persists today. But we should also remember the spirit of that meeting: of transnational nation, of our ability — despite being the largest minority in Europe — to remain a people without a state, without ever arming an army to conquer a land. Of course, we have paid dearly for our difference, and we are paying dearly today. But symbolically, today we represent the most evolved stage of humanity — yet to be reached.

Today, April 8th, is International Romani Day. Romaphobia is a form of racism and ethnic discrimination that still gets swept under the rug and ignored on a massive scale.

Did you know, for example, most Romani people consider 'gypsy' a slur? Or that Romani people were among the first peoples to be targeted by the Nazis, as early as during their rise to power in 1933? And that between 250.000 and 500.000 Romani people were killed during the Holocaust? And that, to this day, Romani people are still discriminated against (sometimes referred to as 'antiziganism', however, as someome in the comments kindly informed me 'zigani' and all variants on the word is also considered a slur by many Romani people), and sometimes even suffer from segregation?

If none of this was known to you, take this as a chance to educate yourself and join the fight for equality and recognition.

Olipa kivaa nähdä romaniliput liehumassa pitkin kaupunkia!

It’s International Romani Day!

The European Commission has posted an inspiring mini documentary about Roma individuals breaking through stereotypes.

It’s sad how common discrimination of Roma still is, and how it gets internalised.
