Julian Lage - Scenes from Above

Something a bit different from Lage, with a quartet featuring John Medeski, Jorge Roeder (bass), and Kenny Wollesen. (Patrick Warren—of, I think, Aimee Mann/Michael Penn/etc—shows up, too.)

I'd say he's in the Frisell mode for some, but there are a lot of great *tunes* here, with everyone stepping forward and contributing.

Really good.

Pat Metheny Group - First Circle

I remember when I bought this back in the 80s, and thinking, when it started "omg, this is going to be a Metheny album I hate".

*Actually* (and fortunately), the first track is kind of a goof, and the rest of the album is sublime (especially the song First Circle, which ended up being a classic). Here it is live:

But man, that first track...

The Mundell Lowe Quartet by The Mundell Lowe Quartet, released on Riverside in 1955.

At AllMusic, Scott Yanow gave the album four stars and said, "Most of this set is essentially straight ahead bebop with guitarist Mundell Lowe heard in top form".

Jakob Bro - Gefion

This is Bro's ECM debut (although I also have three of his Loveland LPs, which I'm sure I'll feature soon).

Bro's reverberant restraint fits in well with the classic ECM production/house sound. He's joined by Thomas Morgan on bass, and they swap melodic lines back and forth while Jon Christensen's cymbal work (with the occasional drum) chimes behind.

Good stuff.

Well named.

Howard Mancel Roberts (October 2, 1929 – June 28, 1992) was an American jazz guitarist, educator, and session musician.

In 1963, Roberts recorded Color Him Funky and H.R. Is a Dirty Guitar Player, his first two albums after signing with Capitol. Produced by Marshall, they both feature the same quartet with Roberts (guitar), Chuck Berghofer (bass), Earl Palmer (drums) and Paul Bryant alternating with Burkley Kendrix on organ. According to Jim Carlton writing for Vintage Guitar magazine these first two albums created a fan base that was not equaled by any other jazz guitarist at that time. After that, Roberts was referred to as simply H.R. and his albums were among the most anticipated jazz releases of the day. - Wikipedia
