The 2nd John Handy Album by The John Handy Quintet, released on Columbia in 1966.

Review by Scott Yanow

Altoist John Handy's second Columbia album was actually his fourth as a leader. Utilizing the same musicians who had joined him during his sensational set at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival (violinist Michael White, guitarist Jerry Hahn, bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke), Handy performs five of his complex yet accessible originals, which include the "Theme X" (in 5/4 time), the catchy "Blues for a Highstrung Guitar," and the adventurous "Scheme #1."

Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival is a live album by saxophonist John Handy, recorded in 1965 and released in 1966...The original album only features two long instrumental pieces, notable for their "free form", a peculiar use of harmonies and unusual instruments.

The album is mentioned in Charles Burnett's 1995 short film When It Rains. Music critic Ralph J. Gleason called the lineup on the album "an exciting group and one of that will make jazz history".

This album is number 67 in a list titled "The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World", published by Jazzwise. - Wikipedia

Hey Diddle Diddle!

Having a great time here in Kitchener Ontario. Still laughing at how a dish ran a way with a spoon. Went to the pub, Cow Over The Moon, there was real hep cat with a fiddle playing jazz like Stéphane Grappelli. Puts a real spring in your step.

Spellbound is the sixth and final album by double bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik featuring performances recorded in 1964 and originally released on the Status label.

Thom Jurek of Allmusic says, "Spellbound isn't as groundbreaking as some of Abdul-Malik's earlier work, but it doesn't need to be: by this point, he had successfully melded jazz with Middle Eastern sounds into a seamless -- if somewhat exotically textural -- whole. The band fires on all cylinders under his inspired direction, making this a fitting sendoff to him as a bandleader. Musically, he saved one of his best for last.".- Wikipedia

Keep On Driving by Don 'Sugarcane' Harris, released on MPS in 1970.

...The rocking Keep On Driving features Kriegel’s funky guitar and a jazzy exploratory solo by Taylor, with Harris sticking to the melody. Blues On The Moon goes extraterrestrial with Oxley bowing his amplified cymbals before Harris gets into a down an’ dirty blues. Which Way Is The Bathroom is a swinging minor key modal jazz masterpiece in which each band member solos, and they all shine. The smooth-flowing 6/8 tempo of Desiree highlights Harris’ romantic side and includes an outstanding Taylor solo. On the hard-swinging Almost Broke, all three front men have their say, and the down-home funk of Coitus Interruptus contrasts with the emotional jazz reminiscences of Remember The Past. Classic Harris combining jazz, blues, and rocking soul. - MPS

King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa is an album by French jazz fusion artist Jean-Luc Ponty first released in May 1970 on Liberty Records' World Pacific Records subsidiary label.

Rolling Stone's Bob Palmer called it "one of the most rewarding and boundary-obliterating collaborations" and said "Zappa, donning his Jazz Composer - Arranger suit, emerges as a first-rate practitioner of the art: his previous lack of acceptance by the jazz community is probably due to the same bizarre touches that endear him to his younger audiences. Here he is reminiscent of Charles Mingus, not musically (except for the Mingus-like melody and violin-tenor voicing of "Twenty Small Cigars") but in the way he examines and finds new expressive possibilities in his earlier pieces, and combines them with new music that refers to wide areas of experience without centring in any one stylistic bag." - Wikipedia

Science Fiction is an album by the American avant-garde jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, recorded in September and October 1971 and released on Columbia Records in February 1972.

Reviewing the album for Pitchfork, Daniel Felsenthal called it "a one-of-a-kind dispatch from the vibrant, polygenic, and contested lofts of downtown New York" and "a welcome return to the singable, quintessentially Southern melodicism that counterbalanced [Coleman's] dauntless early oeuvre" - Wikipedia
