Ended Wednesday and welcomed Thursday with Freigeweht an album by German keyboardist and composer Rainer Brüninghaus recorded in August 1980 and released on ECM the following year. The quartet features Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, Brynjar Hoff on oboe, and Jon Christensen on drums.
Tyran Grillo wrote for ECM Reviews:
...it was only a matter of time before Rainer Brüninghaus would be given an opportunity to lead, and did so at last to soaring effect on Freigeweht with a group of sympathetic musicians and a compositional aptitude to match. Over the space of six fairly extended pieces, we find the keyboardist in many facets. Whether it’s sharing rhythmic savvy with Kenny Wheeler in “Stufen” (Steps) or swapping runes with Brynjar Hoff on English horn in “Die Flüsse hinauf” (Upstream), his hands abide in every blissful moment.

Terje Rypdal is an album by Norwegian jazz guitarist Terje Rypdal recorded over two days in August 1971 and released on ECM later that year. The septet features singer Inger Lise Rypdal, saxophonist Jan Garbarek, oboist Ekkehard Fintl, and rhythm section Bobo Stenson, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen. - Wikipedia
Tyran Grillo wrote on ECM Reviews:
Terje Rypdal’s first ECM effort as frontman is a bewitching look into the Norwegian guitarist’s formative years. With a bevy of talented musicians in tow, he forges a mercurial portrait of late-night melodies and hidden desires. “Keep It Like That – Tight” is stifling and seedy, buffeted by cooling fans and laced with the fumes of an alcoholic haze. It’s a desolate hotel room where more than evening falls..

Blow Out by Håkon Graf / Sveinung Hovensjø / Jon Eberson / Jon Christensen, released on Compendium Records in 1977
One of the standout gems on the legendary Compendium Records label of the 70s – an imprint that was as important to Norway as Love Records was to the scene in Finland! Both labels share a fresh approach to jazz – musicians who are working in fusion, but not afraid to move into proggier territory too – which makes a record like this instantly appealing to fans of both musics, as well as other sorts of 70s electric jazz! There's no vocals at all – and the set features loads of great keyboards from Haakon Graf – playing moog, Fender Rhodes, and organ – in a combo with Jon Eberson on guitar, Jon Christensen on drums, and Sveinung Hovensjo on bass... - Dusty Groove

Dansere (Norwegian: "Dancers") is the second album credited to the Jan Garbarek–Bobo Stenson Quartet, recorded in November 1975 and released on ECM the following year. The quartet features rhythm section Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen.
Tyran Grillo wrote for ECM Reviews:
There is a tendency in ECM’s formative jazz releases toward immersive beginnings. Dansere is no exception, with its introductory flutter of sax and glittering piano runs. Comparing this album to Belonging, which features Keith Jarrett in the same company as Bobo Stenson is here, it’s amazing to consider the differences with another pianist at the fulcrum. One musician’s worth of difference may not seem like much on the back of an album jacket, but here it translates into essentially ten new voices with their own sensibility of time and space...

We Could Be Flying by Karin Krog, released on Polydor in 1974
We Could Be Flying is a rare and classic album by KARIN KROG, a world-class jazz singer from Norway, which has been loved since its original release in 1975. The presence of New York pianist Steve Kuhn, who also composes four of the nine tracks, createsa masterpiece that combines a mellow, gentle comfort with a jazz-like groove.
The album starts off with the title track "We Could be Flying" with its solidly sounding rhythm and soulful Karin's vocals, followed by "Meaning Of Love," and the album starts off with a sound that is sure to please fans of jazz-rock. Yellow Fields is an album by German double bassist and composer Eberhard Weber recorded in September 1975 and released on ECM the following year. The quartet features saxophonist Charlie Mariano, pianist Rainer Brüninghaus and drummer Jon Christensen.
The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded it the maximum four stars and placed it in their Core Collection, writing "Weber's masterpiece is essentially a period piece which nevertheless still seems modern. The sound of it is almost absurdly opulent: bass passages and swimming keyboard textures that reverberate from the speakers, chords that seem to hum with huge overtones. The keyboard textures in particular are of a kind that will probably never be heard on record again." - Wikipedia

Jakob Bro - Gefion
This is Bro's ECM debut (although I also have three of his Loveland LPs, which I'm sure I'll feature soon).
Bro's reverberant restraint fits in well with the classic ECM production/house sound. He's joined by Thomas Morgan on bass, and they swap melodic lines back and forth while Jon Christensen's cymbal work (with the occasional drum) chimes behind.
Good stuff.

Witchi-Tai-To is an album by the Jan Garbarek–Bobo Stenson Quartet recorded over two days in November 1973 and released on ECM the following year. The quartet features rhythm section Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen.
Tyran Grillo wrote for ECM Reviews:
"...Last but not least is “Desireless.” This Don Cherry tune is given a 20-minute treatment that surpasses all expectations. It’s a mournful closer, a song of parting, an unrequited wish. It tries to hold on to a rope that is slipping through its fingers, even as it struggles with all the strength at its disposal to keep the music alive. Garbarek refuses to go down without an incendiary swan song, however, and by the end it is all we have left..."
