My mom told the really grisly stories (again, not at the dinner table) from when she'd visited Europe with a church charity in 1946. About how people who'd lived on almost nothing but potatoes for years really did have that watery grey skin tone like in Van Gogh's "The Potato Eaters." About caring for the feet of men who'd been abandoned on the Eastern Front when V-E Day came; and who had walked back to Germany* more-or-less barefoot, about how "peaceful" it was in the (flattened, empty, incinerated, ashen) parts of Dresden that had been firebombed by the Allies.
*Yes, my mother was kind to Nazis - or at least to mostly unwilling draftees who seemed to have already been punished enough.**
