The map shows a number of places from the #MarsTrilogy, the canal that filled Hellas Planitia with water from the north, and the trip that Sax and Coyote took together to see the making of the canal by the "soletta", the space lens that burnt rock.
The first colonization of Mars occurred, in #KSR's fiction, in 2026.

Linear rainbow palettes can faithfully represent a value, e.g. altitude, but do not necessarily convey much more meaning than that; one must always do a conscious conversion from color to represented value. Since that may still be unnatural, people tend to choose colors close to "natural", e.g. blue depths and brown highlands. In spite of that, the result may still look awfully artificial.
So, when trying to setup a #QGIS map of Mars for #GreenMars ... 😎
