Sea ice continues to melt away in the Bering Sea. The "swiss cheese" pattern of open water interspersed with areas of high ice concentrations is typical for May. Open water increasing in the Chukchi Sea west of Alaska's North Slope but little open water in the southern Chukchi. #akwx #Arctic #Seaice

The Bristol Bay ice though is very unusual this late in the Spring.

Sea ice melt continues apace in the Bering Sea with the total extent well below the 1991-2020 median. The most unusual feature is the persisting ice in upper Bristol Bay. This is the latest in the Spring with sea ice in Bristol Bay since May 2012. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce @[email protected]

Antarctic sea ice defied global warming for decades – now, hidden ocean heat is breaking through | The-14

Scientists warn Antarctic sea ice collapse may accelerate global warming as hidden ocean heat rises, threatening ecosystems and climate balance.

Lovely sunny Thursday at Nome (26F, -3.3C at Noon), with the Nome National Forest hanging tough on the shorefast sea ice. Nome sea ice radar shows the shorefast ice is currently stable out to about 3.5 miles from town. #akwx #SeaIce @[email protected]
