My university uses #Geoblocking of known evil countries.

#Geoblocking is a very sensible and appropriate security measure, as it ensures that

only those with evil and hostile intentions get to your sites -
because for those, geoblocking is easy to circumvent -

while all normal naive believers in global connectivity - such as scientists, academics, students - are left out.

I commend the use of #geoblock

What #VPN can you trust?

Simply speaking, there are three categories:

  • "Free" VPNs: actually data traps, many run by Chinese companies, many "available" as browser add-ons. Avoid at all costs.
  • Conglomerates: A handful of companies, masquerading as a lot of "independent" ones. Possibly ok for bypassing #geoblocking, if you are looking for low latency. Mostly questionable, though, if you want to shift trust from your ISP to a privacy-oriented VPN provider.
  • Privacy-focused VPN providers (like Mullvad VPN, IVPN): recommended for #privacy seekers.

    • For the commercial stories behind the scenes, including some dirty laundry, read Who owns your VPN? 62 VPNs run by just 10 companies. Ironically, this article is maintained on one of the many "recommendation websites" that are affiliates of the conglomerates. Still pretty decent.

It also mentions who-owns-whom, but the main content is a regular, technical analysis of how much server infrastructure is actually shared between providers, because they're relying on the same data centers.
