This. People used to be proud of the software they created! And for good reasons too.
I have fond memories of C64 GEOS by Berkeley Softworks which later became GeoWorks. There was an interview in I think Compute's Gazette on their work on GEOS, how their engineers would take a routine and try to shave off clock cycles and bytes of memory use. And do it several times per each routine. It was such an amazing environment on the ridiculously constrained hardware. And now we have emulators for that stuff running inside the browser, consuming several gigabytes of memory.
One of the fondest memories of it is a when I returned a larger history homework project written with GeoWrite (I think in 1990), and the teacher asked me to stay after class for a chat. I was dreading some disciplining, although wasn't sure for what. Instead he was genuinely amazed at the print quality and just wanted to know what equipment I had used to do it. He was something between flabbergasted and disbelief when I told him it was entirely done on a Commodore 64. He said his expensive new PC couldn't produce anything like it.
What I didn't tell him was that GeoWrite didn't have scandinavian letters, so I had to add the dots over ä and ö manually 😄

Ten pierwszy jest bardzo szykowny w zielonym malowaniu (czarna wersja jest nieporywająca), ale nie było mojego rozmiaru, żebym mógł się przymierzyć.
Cube był tylko zielony i w wersji FE – z dynamem, światłami i błotnikami. Nawet przez chwilę się zastanawiałem nad takim wydaniem, bo dynamo wydaje się dobrym pomysłem, ale tam wszystko jest zintegrowane i gdybym chciał kiedyś zdjąć błotniki, musiałbym wyciągać z ramy przewody, których ponowne włożenie jest niełatwe w warunkach domowych bez narzędzi.
Matowy lakier Cube niestety wygląda na taki, który będzie ciągle upieprzony – jak nie od kurzu, to od śladów palców, więc gdyby padło na ten rower, to wybierałbym raczej błyszczącą wersję cappuccino. A sam rowerek jest śliczny i spawy ma tak głaciuteńkie, że na ustawkach można wciskać lipę, że to carbon. Tyle że chyba trochę dla mnie za długi i potrzebowałbym wyraźnie krótszego mostka. Ale i tak myślę o wypróbowaniu amortyzowanych mostków Redshift, więc byłaby okazja.
Amin GirasolI happened to dip into an old episode of @rcrpodcast. Paul, Quinn and Carrington mentioned a wonderful 1988 episode of #TheComputerChronicles which is a celebration of the surprisingly long-lived and continuingly successful #Commodore64.
In the Computer Chronicles episode, we learn about a new geometric puzzle game from the Soviet Union, hear of the first Western hemisphere virus to infect Soviet computers, get an early indication that all is not well with the new Ashton Tate dBase IV, but best of all, we get to visit some of the #GEOS development team at their office and meet a plethora of wonderful Commodore 64 users demonstrating the diverse uses to which they're putting their machines. Excellent stuff!

@rower Po długim czytaniu o całej masie szutrówek, przeglądaniu stron producentów i sklepów oraz studiowaniu specyfikacji, stworzyłem listę 20+ aluminiowych modeli europejskich marek, które wyglądały ciekawie, a teraz obciąłem ją do 4 pozycji – 2 polskich i 2 niemieckich. Być może w poniedziałek przytnę ją jeszcze bardziej, w zależności od tego, czy będzie mi się chciało pojechać do Bydgoszczy, żeby sprawdzić nowego Geosa.
We wtorek jadę na bike-sizing i okaże się, który ma geometrię najlepiej pasującą do mojego starego ciała oraz jeżdżenia, które planuję i w końcu będę mógł zamówić nowy rower \o/
