To limit one’s sense of games to abstract sets of rules is to ignore the central importance of how they are played by specific people in specific contexts. André Philidor’s 1749 claim that ‘p…

Game designers! Are you currently:
- Working on a game?
- Thinking about how players can/can't fail in it?
- Willing to share insights with a researcher while doing a (hopefully fun and productive) activity?👀

If so, I would love to hear from you! Follow the link below for more info! I should also highlight that we offer compensation for your time, see below.

Game (Not) Over: participation interest form.

Hi there! I'm Charline Foch, a PhD researcher at the University of York, looking into player experiences of failure and (video) game design. I'm interested in learning about how game designers think about, and approach the idea of failure when making games, and how it fits in their design vision. This project will have game designers participate in a 90-min activity designed to have you brainstorm ideas and thoughts around how player failure currently works (or doesn't) in a current game project. Everything will take place on Zoom and playingcards.io and will be recorded (the recordings will not be made public, they are for my use only). There is no preparation required on your end - only to be ready to chat about your game, and hopefully have fun doing it! Compensation is offered: a £20 Amazon voucher per participant, to be sent to you by my university's finance department after completing the activity. Hopefully, this activity will be a productive discussion for you too! I am looking for: - Game designers/devs who are currently working on a game. It can be a commercial game (as long as you don't share anything that's under NDA!), a personal project, or something for a game jam you're participating in. - I'm particularly interested in recruiting teams (at least 2-people) to make the brainstorming process easier/more productive, but solo designers are absolutely welcome too. - If you have a particular interest in narrative / story, even better! Interested in participating in this research? Please fill out this form, we will be in touch shortly!

Is there a game studio more diverse in what they've successfully made than Image and Form? They got combined into Thunderful, so maybe there's some crossover expertise, but they're taking on very different genres with (I would predict here) a solid amount of success.
