See: My Personal Interpretation of Star Ratings

Based on finally figuring out my star ratings, I’m switching things up a bit this year and organizing my played games into 3 different star lists. These lists contain most games I played this year. I played very few games that actually released this year.

Emotionally great ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ games

Hades II
  • Metal Gear Solid (1998, GOG) I wrote an essay on this back in March. I’m going to miss those proverbs of yours.
  • Hades II (2025, Switch 2) I felt at home most with the Umbral Flames. They felt like they belonged in my real hands.
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2020, Steam) People talk about the amount of violence in video games and how that can negatively impact society. But not enough people talk about the amount of goodness in games and how that can inspire you to see life like a Dragon Quest hero.

Technically great ⭐⭐⭐⭐ games

Street Fighter 6
  • Ikaruga (2001, Steam) One of my favourite games I am absolutely awful at.
  • Mario Kart World (2025, Switch 2) All the animation work makes the game feel so alive and expressive. The driving feels a little nicer than 8, but maybe that’s just me. It feels both more forgiving if you’re playing to have fun, but more demanding if you’re trying to win. Maybe that just means they made rubberbanding tighter, but that’s a very Nintendo decision to make. It’s more fun trying to win than winning.
  • Gunstar Heroes (1993, Genesis) One of the few Genesis games I replay every few years; a gem of great game feel, visuals, and speed. Hasn’t aged a day.
  • Street Fighter 6 (2023, Switch 2) The game I put the most hours into out of any game on this list (just over 60 hours). It’s my sport, now. The Switch 2’s version has one major advantage over the others: it takes way less time to go from off to playing.
  • Parasite Eve (1998, Playstation) I can’t think of a game more begging of an HD remake with a couple of tweaks than this one.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (2024, Switch) Somewhere along the way, they added a “favourite” button and that went a long way to fixing the annoying menu system, bumping it up considerably.

Acceptable ⭐⭐⭐ games

Bravely Default
  • Glyphica: Typing Survival (2024, Steam) I enjoy blinking too much to really enjoy this but I get the appeal.
  • Arkanoid: Eternal Battle (2022, GOG) One of my childhood Amiga all-timers but it’s not the kind of game that’s super fun today.
  • Blazing Lazers (1989, TurboGrafx-16) A nice crunchy schmup with a handful of evil attack patterns. This is one of my childhood comfort games.
  • Celeste Classic (2015, Playdate) What a toughie.
  • Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours (2015, Steam) Darius isn’t my favourite type of schmup, but I can’t argue the amount of love in this “cabinet”. The DLC seems to be the real value here, unlocking extremely niche characters from schmup’s long past (like Sidearms from the TurboGrafx) and allowing you to play through the levels with not only their ship but also their abilities. Wild stuff.
  • The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match (2002, Steam) If I get the itch for KOF, this is where I’ll head.
  • Ridge Racer 2 (2006, PSP) The psp aspect ratio feels so wide, right? It’s great for racers.
  • Power Stone 2 (2000, Dreamcast) Its time as a lost classic is about to come to an end. A rerelease on popular consoles might just give it a second life. There should be more party fighters. We used to have it pretty good.
  • Bravely Default (2013, 3DS) Read my full review at Backloggd. This game inspired an essay I wrote back in June about gamifying the fun out of an experience.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour (2025, Switch 2) As a video game, not very fun and extremely oddly priced for what is absolutely a tech demo showcase. As a piece of educational software, however, I’m extremely impressed. Every online dashboard is so bad, and should absolutely rip Welcome Tour off from here on.
  • Hollow Knight (2017, Switch) Metroidvania’s are not my genre. This one is cool, pretty, haunting, difficult, and probably worth the frustration. I’m not in a space where I want to bang my head against the wall. Maybe someday.
  • Namco Museum (2017, Switch) The good version of Pac Man Championship Edition is in this one.
  • Box Boy! + Box Girl! (2019, Switch) The Metal Gear VR Missions for Nintendo platformers.
  • Virtual Boy Wario Land (1995, Virtual Boy) Playing virtual boy games on the 3DS with the 3D slider cranked up gives you about as comfortable an experience as possible. I can’t help but guess that it’s more comfortable than Nintendo’s upcoming re-release of the Virtual Boy tabletop headset. It’s still a good idea to take a break between levels. Put some eyedrops in.
  • Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (2017, 3DS) Good cast, good fantasy plot beats, only okay tactics.

Notes & thoughts

I began 2025 by releasing Ambidex, a family of custom controllers that allow people to play retro games in the Delta app in new orientations. I’ve heard many positive reviews of them, and I’m thrilled so many people have downloaded and tried my designs. At the time of Ambidex’s release, 8,500 people had downloaded my previous controllers. Going by the number on Delta Styles, the download count is now 22,653! I’m so absolutely stunned by that. Thank you to everyone who gave it a shot.

I consider the Delta Skins project over for now. I’m looking forward to making the next thing.

Now, how about that gaming backlog?

At the end of 2024, my backlog was 222 games. As of this post, it’s now…166. Damn, that’s progress! It lines up pretty well with the 46 games in my “played in 2025” list. A little bit of backlog clean-up accounts for the rest. This was a good year for getting through it!

In June, I picked up a Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. I’ve been a gamer my whole life, but it took until 2025 for me to pre-order a new console and buy it on day one. My six month review of the Switch 2: It’s good! I’ve played it nearly every day. I hope it lasts as long as the first one. It still rarely leaves my living room.

Last year, I wrote about my 3DS dying on me. I was honestly excited to move on from it, and try some new things. I was looking forward to the Switch 2, and perhaps even consolidating all of my gaming to one device. Two months after getting the Switch 2, I found a cheap original 3DS on eBay and impulsively purchased it. Luckily, it was in great condition. And with that, I’ve got a portable Nintendo again.

Notes & thoughts

2022 was very much a backlog year for me. I spent most of my game time in JRPGs, (FF6, TMS:FE, DQ11) and finished none of them. It’s very telling that the games I did finish were all somewhat short platformers and Playdate games.

But a backlog year is good!

2023 had a ludicrous number of new games already announced, so I expect this list to be pretty different next year.

Notes & thoughts

I think 2023 is the year gaming became my main form of personal entertainment. I took working on my backlog more seriously this year, even culling a good number. It was also the year I hit on the most platforms. Switch, Steam, Playdate, Apple Arcade, and even a few 3DS games are present. I have games on my backlog for all of these next year.

It’s amazing to me that the Switch is seven years old and still cranking out all of my favorite games.

The list is longer this year for Playdate, which is a gem of a video game console that provides delightful and brief experiences. I think I’ve used it a total of 10 hours this year but they were some of the best gaming hours of the year.

In terms of games that actually released in 2023, my favourites were Tears of the Kingdom, Cocoon, and Street Fighter 6.

But as with 2022, this was mostly a backlog year. I finally beat Super Mario 64, and made progress on Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass. Persona 5 Royal and Tokyo Mirage Sessions were last-gen RPGs that I loved. I think this is the year I made my backlog manageable. I feel like I can actually work with it instead of feeling completely buried.

Finishing 24 games is a major accomplishment, but it also may have been *too many games* for one year. I’m very curious how 2024 will go.

The Switch will begin breathing fumes this year. Everyone is expecting a new Nintendo console, but I don’t see myself buying it this year, no matter what it is. My backlog got smaller this year through effort and culling, but it’s still standing at 308 games. At my pace, it’ll take me a decade to get through it. I could skip an entire console generation and be fine. I wonder if I could?

Notes & thoughts

2023 was the year gaming became my main form of personal entertainment, and that continued this year. There is a melancholy to that, of course. I don’t play games with others very often. Part of that is, I enjoy single-player narrative games the most. But the other part is most people I know don’t play games all that much. I follow gamers on social media and listen to podcasts where people talk about games they love, but in my real-life circles, gaming is rare.

2024 was another big backlog busting year for me. I mostly played games from the 90s, and on Nintendo consoles. There’s a reason for that. This year, I designed a series of game controllers that work with Delta, an iOS emulator. I had to test a good variety of games to make sure they worked.

At the end of 2023, my backlog was 308 games long. It is now 222. How, I didn’t play 86 games this year (32, actually), and I definitely added some new titles to the list. But somewhere in there, I culled the thing down. The term “backlog” has some negative connotations, because it feels like homework you’ve given yourself. It might be healthier to think of it as a wine collection: a curated personal set of things I plan to enjoy in the future.

2024 was also when I began using Backloggd.com as my main way to log my gaming time. It’s been a good website for it, and I don’t regret switching from my own personal database. It’s aim to be Letterboxd for video games seems to be working. Backloggd has a very nice section called “GOTY” (game of the year), where you select your own personal Best ofs. It only lets you select games that you’ve played in the year, which limited my options (I would have happily given out nods to games I’ve seen but not played). I only played 6 games from 2024, and only completed one.

Which means my Game of the Year is Thank Goodness You’re Here. I’d love to give it to Balatro, but I hesitate awarding something so dangerous. TGYH was funny, brief, accessible, unique, and the one game I played with another person in the room. That should maybe tell me something.

Last thing: my 3DS finally gave out on me this year. It was probably my favourite single-player game console of my entire life, and gave me untold hours of fun and companionship. That gadget had character. 2025 might be the first year the Switch actually becomes my main Nintendo. Wouldn’t that be funny?

Sawyer’s Media Log, 2020

I’ve been keeping better track of the things I consume this year. I couldn’t have done it without Notion and this blog. Here’s my top lists for every category. If I remember to, I’ll expand each section with reasons for each. If I don’t, assume each one of things gave me some joy and got me through some of this year.

Note: I definitely consumed more media than this in 2020, but I tried to keep it to things that were released this year.

Favourite Live-action TV Shows

  • Lovecraft Country – It’s very good and a bit sloppy but so much fun and fast it doesn’t matter. Just a goddamn blast from beginning to end.
  • Perry Mason – I don’t care at all about Perry Mason but I will follow Matthew Rhys into oblivion. I wonder if this had been made in the 2000s it would have just been a 150 minute feature and forgotten by awards season.
  • Fargo – Fargo season 5 is the only TV show this year that should actually be required viewing.
  • Avenue 5 – This show seemed stupid in January but then super smart by March.
  • What We Do In the Shadows – This show is delight medicine. I hope it gets the Sunny contract and runs until the end of time.

Favourite Anime

  • Dorohedoro – Lightning in a bottle creativity. I want the backgrounds of this show as art on my walls. Having said that, it’s very, very niche and might not appeal to, uh, anyone but me?
  • Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken – A celebration of the creative process, animation, and that period of your life where nobody’s really paying attention to you and you can get away with the thing.
  • Somali and the Forest Spirit – Hey, you wanna good cry? Here you go.

Games I played too much of but are they ever really done?

Notes & thoughts

  • The ratings are out of 5. My rating system for games is the same as my rating system for wrestling matches.
  • I recorded and edited a video for almost every game I beat. I did not mean to do this!
  • Most of the games I tried but won’t return to are from the Sega Genesis Collections bundle. I think this says more about the nature of bundled game collections than anything specifically about the Genesis. I purposefully put aside a few games in that collection to enjoy later, but that doesn’t show up in the data.
  • 2021 was a year I subscribed to Xbox Game Pass for a few months, Apple Arcade, and the Nintendo Online service (I’m a sucker who upgraded to the expansion pak as well). I can’t help but think that subscriptions to game collections are only going to become more of a thing as time goes on. For the purposes of my own organization, I categorize games from these collections as if its a separate system entirely. That’s why there’s “Nintendo Switch” and “Nintendo Switch Online.”
  • I played roms mainly to try out mods and hacks and cheats, because I spent a few months this year being very interested in how they work in terms of enjoying games using fresh perspectives. I still might make a video about that sometime.
  • I “beat” Project-X-Zone 2 this year, but I played 99% of it back in 2016. I had just left the game at the final boss without having finished the thing. You ever just stop watching a TV show before the last episode? It’s like that. You’ll come back to it when you’re ready for it to be over, not when the creators are.
  • My video game spreadsheet lives on Airtable, which is pretty perfect for things like this.
