A Shared Lunch! Next to share her lunch is Chloe Alexander, whose article in Vol. 12 No. 3 of Canadian Food Studies addresses food loss and waste as it meets jurisdiction. How do the federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments in Canada address food loss and waste? And are there alternative ways to interpret jurisdiction and amend and improve governance? https://canadianfoodstudies.uwaterloo.ca/index.php/cfs/issue/view/41

On a small scale, Alexander’s lunch demonstrates the author’s personal preoccupation with food waste reduction. It’s made of leftovers! "...from a get together with friends—handmade pasta with a tomato/eggplant/mushroom sauce, topped with ricotta and parmesan cheese." (“Yum!” —ed.)

From the personal, Alexander’s article deftly walks readers through the systemic. Read and find out more: https://doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v12i3.720

In a bid to reduce food waste, Japan's health ministry released draft guidelines Wednesday on how customers can ask restaurants for a take-home bag if the leftovers meet the country's hygiene standards. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/10/18/japan/health-ministry-takeout-bag-guidelines/ #japan #foodloss #food #restaurants

Making more food available can be achieved through several complementary measures including reducing food waste and food losses.

Both impact our environment, but what's the difference between #FoodWaste and #FoodLoss? 🍎

Tünde Nagy-Bántó (@tundenagybanto@federate.social)

In the UK 10,7 million tonnes of food is wasted per year, but there is neither official government gathered & controlled information, nor policy to prevent #FoodWaste. The widely published UK food waste figures are self-reported data collected by the NGO #WrapUK without any checks whether these numbers are true or not: https://www.wrap.ngo/ #UKFoodWaste #FoodSystems

#KimuraNaoko developed fruits and vegetables scraps-based natural #crayons which are much safer for smaller kids.

She also uses up discarded flowers to create additional colours.

Love that supermarkets display them in the vegetables section 💚

Kids just love coloring with crayons! But what if a child puts them in their mouth or tries to eat them? Kimura Naoko has come up with a new type of crayon made with fruits and vegetables that's totally non-toxic. And instead of "red" or "yellow," each one is labeled with the name of the key ingredient like "apple" or "yam." Most of the raw materials used are discards or remainders. Her crayons' aim is to spread love for the bounty of the earth.

Western wasteful practices where only the best crops cut the mark and everything else is left to rot in the fields is unacceptable.

I have already written about launching a new line of produce: the second grade / Grade2 / #SubstandardProduce. I see a huge potential market for it, especially for organic.

Here is my previous post: https://federate.social/@tundenagybanto/113057624166495595

Another important topic is #FarmFoodWaste. Allowing and facilitating the sale of #Grade2Produce either in separate shops or in normal grocery stores should also be a government supported and promoted initiative. It will help both the poor and the environmentally conscious. Placing these vendors in neighbourhoods with struggling communities and in farmers markets would be a quick win. Here is one example how it is done in Germany. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/2058917/ #FoodWaste #ClimateAction #FoodSystems
