An Interview With A Fired USFWS Fish Biologist | Defector

Chinook salmon start their lives high upstream in the rivers of western North America. The young fish linger in the safety of freshwater until they are big enough to head out into the open ocean, where they can live for up to five years. At sea, the salmon shine blue-green and glint silver. When the […]

Looking forward to seeing the chum salmon arrive in my area again. This photo is from last year in Carkeek Park in Seattle. While their ocean phase is silver, their freshwater spawning phase develops some exciting colors and stripes! Do you have winter runs of salmon near you? I'm looking for more places for photos.

The annual pump out of the large lock at Ballard Locks is underway. Today was fish rescue day when we capture any Endangered Species Act listed fish and release them to Puget Sound. Then we do our best with everything else. No salmon found, so it was easier than most years. The area is under construction to replace the 100-year-old center gates, which will take a couple months. Here are a few scenes from the fish biologist perspective.

Here’s what a fish rescuer looks like! The bottom of the large lock chamber is really interesting, but the tunnels along the sides are super creepy.

We typically rescue several salmon, thousands of herring and sticklebacks, and a bunch of other miscellaneous fish. One year my coworkers had to deal with a 6-foot sturgeon. Bummer I missed that day!

Now who has my bucket?

It seems common practice to do an #introduction here, so here it is, a day late!
I can define myself as #FishBiologist interested in #ecophysiology, #ecology & #behavior. I work in the #field & #lab and use an #IntegrativeBiology approach to study how fish #performance relate to their environment. I currently do a #postdoc on the effects of heat stress on #AtlanticSalmon growth and will soon join the biology department of UQAR as an assistant professor in Fish Ecology
