A deity approaching a myth like Falcone? An institutional insult.
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, whom the opposition must never make the political mistake of asking to resign because he is the best ally to win the next elections, has made another one of them, in fact. During the commemoration of the Capaci massacre in Sicily, which has become increasingly an occasion for shocking political and institutional performances, he somehow compared himself to none other than Giovanni Falcone. Nordio recounted in his speech that he and Falcone had risked their lives, Nordio to fight against the Red Brigades and Falcone against the mafia. The worst juxtaposition imaginable. A magistrate, a hero internationally in the fight against the mafia who paid with his life for his conduct as a good, honest, independent and courageous judge, and a magistrate who distinguished himself during his career primarily by writing editorials for a newspaper owned by an important political figure, which was the antithesis of the fight against the mafia, then becoming a minister who initiated a crusade specifically against independent and autonomous judges.
The comparison that Nordio makes of himself to a myth like Falcone is truly an insult to the institution. With a reference to the Red Brigades, which were dramatically involved in horrific crimes and didn’t even pluck a hair from the now public prosecutor Nordio’s, seeing politicians’ showmen appearing in Palermo on May 23rd, men and women of the institutions so distant from the giant human, ethical and professional profile of servants of the republic like Giovanni Falcone, defiling the image and life of those who made our country’s positive history, is truly unbearable. And among the hypocrites, the liars, and the scoundrels, we must not forget the toga traitors who, while magistrates like Falcone and Borsellino were working with their robes against the mafias risking their lives, left them alone and created the conditions for their death.
Let us never forget that Falcone and Borsellino, and unfortunately not only them, were also killed with the complicity of those who in the judiciary isolated them and, in some cases, created the actual conditions for the physical or professional end of judges unwelcome to the criminal power.
