๐Ÿ‘‹ Greetings! ๐Ÿ‘‹

We wanted to remind all #fakespeakers that the #Fakespeak project is still alive and kicking โ€“ especially after a long and #fakenews filled summer vacation.

We have some great events and research output coming out in the next few months, including a #linguistics conference, #multilingual fake news #corpora, publications bringing together advanced linguistic features and #transformermodels, and a special issue in Linguistics Vanguard on the language of fake news.

Follow along!

This week #Fakespeak attended #icame45. ICAME is a well-known meeting place for corpus linguists and for its excellent social programme (which always includes a boat trip). Plus, this year's ICAME was quite literally on the beach ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Fakespeak was represented by 2 talks: an empirical one and a methodological one, which we will now write up for everyone to read.

Thanks to all who attended our talks and to the organisers for another successful ICAME conference! ๐Ÿ™

#Fakespeak has arrived in Pisa, Italy for the 10th International Pragmatics Conference 2024 #INPRA2024 ๐Ÿฅณ

Our presentation is tomorrow and reveals some of our very new findings about stance marking in English vs Russian #fakenews. We found some very interesting differences in terms of semantic and pragmatic function, so watch this space to know more!

Recently we held our 3rd annual workshop of #Fakespeak at the University of Oslo. The two key topics were: where are we now in #fakenews analysis and detection and what are some of the ways forward, especially in relation to #AIgenerated content? Along with updates from our project members (Silje, Nele, Lisa, Zia, Aleena), we had 4 invited speakers: 2 from #linguistics, 1 from #media and 1 from #computerscience. Hereโ€™s a little bit about what we learned from them (1/ )

We're back with updates on the #Fakespeak annual workshop on 24 January 2024 at the University of Oslo!

Find the programme here: https://www.hf.uio.no/ilos/english/research/projects/fakespeak/ (scroll down to Events)

The day is divided into two: #linguistics in the morning, and #media and #computer sciences in the afternoon. The focus is on #AIgenerated #disinformation: should be eye-opening!

For those who are not able to attend in person, we will do our best to post about the talks throughout the day. ๐Ÿ’ช

Fakespeak โ€“ the language of fake news - Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages

Linguistic cues in fake news may be the key to its detection.

At #Fakespeak, we meet every year to update our colleagues/collaborating partners/stakeholders on our progress as well as learn from experts in the field.

The next annual Fakespeak workshop is planned for 24 January 2024 at the University of Oslo (in-person only).

Those in the area are welcome to attend! ๐Ÿ‘‹

We will return with more information, but here's what we know so far (scroll down for preliminary programme, abstracts, practical information):

Hi there! ๐Ÿ˜Š I'm Aleena, a junior computer science researcher at SINTEF AS since May 2021. In #Fakespeak,
I primarily focus on collecting #Norwegian datasets and assisting with text analysis. My interests revolve
around #NLP applications and contextualized #wordembeddings. Outside of work, I like to unwind with
activities such as table tennis, cooking, enjoying music, and playing games.
Hi! I am Zia, senior research scientist at SINTEF Digital, Oslo. My research mainly focuses on #featureanalysis, #machinelearning, #XAI, #patternrecognition in different applications. I've got around 150 peer-reviewed research publications, including a book, book chapters, conferences, and journals. In #Fakespeak project, I am trying to build a machine-learning model to detect and explain fake news. Besides my work, I usually listen to music, watch TV, and spend quality time with my family.
Hey there! I'm Lisa (Elizaveta Kibisova), a PhD student in #linguistics at the University of Oslo. Part of the #Fakespeak team, diving deep into the linguistic intricacies of #Russian #fakenews. Enjoying my life in Norway ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด , but also travel a lot for work and adventures. #Language lover and truth seeker! ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘ฉ โค๏ธ
Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹ Iโ€™m Nele Pรตldvere, a postdoc in English Linguistics at the Uni of Oslo. I work with large quantities of text data (#corpuslinguistics) to find recurring patterns of language in different genres/registers/groups of people. In #Fakespeak, I focus specifically on #metaphor and #evaluation in #English, and work closely with computer scientists to develop effective fake news corpora and automatic detection systems using #machinelearning techniques. I like ๐Ÿฑ and to ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ !
