Reporting from #INPRA2024 📢

In our study on the use of stance markers in #English and #Russian #fakenews, we found that both languages are characterised by a slightly higher use of stance in fake news compared to genuine news.

Also, the meanings were very different: English is more tentative, less attitudinal than Russian.

Hence:

English (mainly in the US) = open up the space for dialogic alternatives, less control, readership with access to diverse media.
Russian = the opposite!

A whole day dedicated to #fakenews and #hatespeech. What luxury! #INPRA2024

#Fakespeak has arrived in Pisa, Italy for the 10th International Pragmatics Conference 2024 #INPRA2024 🥳

Our presentation is tomorrow and reveals some of our very new findings about stance marking in English vs Russian #fakenews. We found some very interesting differences in terms of semantic and pragmatic function, so watch this space to know more!
