You can remove DRM from Kindle books. I've done it myself for over a hundred books, which I was then able to port into #ReadEra an #epub reader.
There are lots of websites that will tell you how to do it. This is an example. Good luck

Amazon now lets you download some Kindle books as DRM-free EPUBs. A step forward -- but once you start reading EPUBs, you notice how much quality varies between editions.
Proper typography, consistent formatting, good metadata. These things matter more than you'd think.

I use a #KoboTouch (a.k.a. N905C or Touch C or kobo4) since 12 years now.
It's 165 × 114 × 10 [mm] with 185 g.
I never connected it to the #Kobo #bookshop for #privacy reasons. Instead, I just copied the #epub files to it.
I run two #freeSoftware #ereader apps on it: #koreader and #plato. I prefer the former, but many enjoy the latter. The builtin reader isn't entirely bad, but I strongly suggest the other options.

Every "free ebook" list starts and ends with Project Gutenberg. The sources I actually use are better — and nobody talks about them.
Standard Ebooks rebuilds public domain texts with proper typography. OAPEN has free peer-reviewed academic books. Open Library lends modern books like a real library.
