簡單說，燒生物質（Biogenic）垃圾就算再生能源，例如紙、樹枝、枯葉、廚餘；燒非生物質的垃圾，例如塑膠、橡膠，就不算再生能源。

不過不管算不算再生能源，燒塑膠垃圾：
1. 燒出一大堆污染；
2. 許多塑膠都可以回收再利用，把自然界孕育數百萬年的資源就這樣燒掉了
