Litter Winter/Spring 2026 - Ecological Design Collective

This publication emerges from a shared recognition that toxicity has become a defining condition of our time, manifesting through chemical pollution and environmental degradation, as well as social inequities, extractive economies, institutional violence, and systems that erode collective care. In such a moment, the work of ecological design must move beyond diagnosing harm and toward cultivating the practices, relationships, and imaginaries capable of countering it.

Bougainvillea doesn’t thrive despite hardship — it thrives because of it.
Constraint is part of the system.

Laguna Cejar - Salar de Atacama, Chile. Una de las cosas que más admiré de las instalaciones del parque en Atacama fueron los pequeños edificios cuidadosamente diseñados y construidos con materiales locales.

#Sustainable human #systems must account for #caregiving and #social support as #resources.

On the receiving end, the positive emotional experience of being cared for warrants redundancy and reinforcement. On the giving end, #care draws from limited stocks. Time and #emotionallabor are finite.

Systems with reliable personal #support reduce overall material needs.

In the context of #making, nonmaterial needs serve as a screening device.

#Psychological needs and emotional experiences are innumerable. Material human needs are more limited and countable, and there may be finite ways of meeting them—especially within each #region and #climate. It's more feasible to start by addressing material essentials while holding each approach to emotional tests.

Something about #EcologicalDesign feels to me like a fear of relinquishing control, and a manifestation of the impulse to shape and create the world.

What if we embraced the non-human instead of trying to simulate it?
