New #research aims to bring underwater noise’s true impact on killer whales into focus.
Extended periods of time at sea are necessary to collect the data that will bring us closer to understanding – and protecting – killer whales.

Our #cetacean #scientists are preparing for an ambitious 2026 field season aboard Raincoast’s Sailing Vessel Achiever. #RaincoastConservationFoundation has joined forces with #EarthSpeciesProject , a #nonprofit research lab using machine learning to advance our understanding of #AnimalCommunication. At the heart of this project is a deceptively simple idea: to watch and listen at the same time. The team aims to uncover how killer whales use sound to coordinate movements, share prey, and maintain social bonds – to ultimately understand and mitigate how noise pollution interferes with these processes.

@mstrlaw my stance on this is that we will have better AI than we currently have, it will never “take over” or endanger us, it will disadvantage some of us sometimes but this will be continually corrected and smoothed out, and it will definitely benefit us by both enabling and enhancing

but, I do think it will bring some surprises

one in particular that I’m quite intrigued by is the work currently ongoing with applying LLMs to animal communication – there are several aspects of that which differ from conventional ‘chat’ usage of LLMS, the main one is that our current chat LLMs are largely trained on online presence of discussions and talking by young entitled white rich technical-yet-stupid argumentative males and this means that the ‘style’ that a current chat LLM is aiming for is that style – applying an LLM to animal communications doesn’t have that deficiency to start with

when we get to a stage where we can ‘converse’ with groups or individuals of animals of various types, when we get to a point where they can express something significant and we can do the same back, and it works as a conversation, then I think this will change humanity irreversibly in so many unexpected ways

it will also prepare us a lot for when aliens land

I’m amazed at the range of sounds ravens make, and have often wished for a dictionary of raven sounds.

Well, we don’t have that yet, but look! From the Guardian: “A California-based organisation wants to harness the power of machine learning to decode communication across the entire animal kingdom.”

Can artificial intelligence really help us talk to the animals?

A California-based organisation wants to harness the power of machine learning to decode communication across the entire animal kingdom. But the project has its doubters
