New #research aims to bring underwater noise’s true impact on killer whales into focus.
Extended periods of time at sea are necessary to collect the data that will bring us closer to understanding – and protecting – killer whales.

Our #cetacean #scientists are preparing for an ambitious 2026 field season aboard Raincoast’s Sailing Vessel Achiever. #RaincoastConservationFoundation has joined forces with #EarthSpeciesProject , a #nonprofit research lab using machine learning to advance our understanding of #AnimalCommunication. At the heart of this project is a deceptively simple idea: to watch and listen at the same time. The team aims to uncover how killer whales use sound to coordinate movements, share prey, and maintain social bonds – to ultimately understand and mitigate how noise pollution interferes with these processes.

@PhoenixSerenity Oh, you mean Orcas.
@starlily Orcas are in the hashtags ✌️

@starlily @PhoenixSerenity

Sea kittens. They have really pretty smiles.

And as much as I understand the entire purpose of a kitten is to kill things prettily, I did find the article’s insistent use of killer whale, as opposed to orca, grating in that nails ona chalkboard way.

And quite possibly not conducive to conservation, should that actually be the authors’ intention.

@hypostase @starlily It's typical when white folks write the article.
@PhoenixSerenity
I'd kinda hoped we were doing better than that :/
@starlily
@hypostase @starlily Still a very long way to go with decolonization work. Their staff isn't as diverse as they could be.
@PhoenixSerenity If the orcas’ response to all this noise is to sink yachts, I thank our cetacean siblings for their service, and hope they can bring the silence they need.
@su_liam That activity was more limited to a subset of orcas off Atlantic waters. The Pacific orcas (residents & transients).have different language & behaviours.
@PhoenixSerenity Sometimes I try to be funny. I’d like to think I don’t always fail, but the evidence is scant.🤷‍♂️
@su_liam It's an evergreen orca meme 👍
