Free ebook: “Uncle Abraham’s Romance” by Edith Nesbit

If there’s a solstice or an equinox approaching, you know it’s time for another free ebook in my Grammaticus Free Library series!

The eleventh title is a short ghost story by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924), a prolific English writer, poet, and socialist activist. Originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1891, it was republished two years later in the collection of her short stories titled “Grim Tales.”

E. Nesbit

It tells the story of a lonely old man remembering a series of unusual encounters with a mysterious woman. Was she just a product of his imagination or perhaps a visitor from the beyond? If you like ghost stories, you’ll enjoy this one!

Like the previous ebooks, this one also contains vocabulary notes intended for English language learners, levels B2 and above.

I just watched this year's Christmas Eve ghost story. A bit late I know! It was very spooky and atmospheric.

A Ghost Story for Christmas - Woman of Stone

Edith Nesbit recounts the chilling tale of newlywed Victorians Jack and Laura and the legend of two marble tomb effigies, who are said to rise each year and walk.

The indie publisher Handheld Press has made regular appearances on the Ramblings, as I'm a real fan of their beautifully produced books. As well as reprinted fiction, they've also released anthologies, biographies, nature writing, fantasy/sci fi and crime titles, to name just a few. Sadly, Handheld is coming to a close later this year, which is a huge shame; but they're certainly going out with a bang!

I paid my respects to author and poet, Edith Nesbit, today. Edith died exactly 100 years ago today, aged 65. She is buried in St Mary in the Marsh, Kent.
E. Nesbit is one of my favourite authors. Her imagination, her engaging style and her sense of humour were formidable.
