Puerto Rico's distributed energy revolution: rooftop solar now provides 20% (1,456 MW) of the island's electricity capacity.

This transformation includes 171,372 battery systems (2,864 MWh), creating resilience against hurricane outages while reducing imported fuel dependence.

ERCOT is seeing massive data center growth—but the grid wasn’t built for this kind of demand.

This is exactly why local generation and renewables matter. It’s not just about clean energy. It’s about keeping the lights on.

Yet another excellent Volts podcast, although this one doesn't provide the uplift that most do. I've long thought about how smart meters could help us coordinate electricity use at scale. The good news: they are almost ubiquitous now. The bad new: utilities still lock up the data, thus blocking the network effects we desperately need. Enabling regulation exists for health care and finance, but not yet for energy.

Free the smart-meter data!

Most ratepayers in the US have a smart meter generating real-time data about their power usage, which could theoretically be used to reduce consumption and save money, but in most cases, utilities have locked up the information in inaccessible formats. Michael Murray, leader of business coalition Mission:data, describes the potential value of smart meter data and the group’s ongoing efforts to pry it from utilities.
