ERCOT is seeing massive data center growth—but the grid wasn’t built for this kind of demand.

This is exactly why local generation and renewables matter. It’s not just about clean energy. It’s about keeping the lights on.

Data center activity ‘exploded’ in Texas, spiking reliability risks: monitor

AI data centers have power demand patterns similar to steel mills, with “very fast, very large ramps,” according to David Penny, director of reliability services for Texas RE.

Yet another excellent Volts podcast, although this one doesn't provide the uplift that most do. I've long thought about how smart meters could help us coordinate electricity use at scale. The good news: they are almost ubiquitous now. The bad new: utilities still lock up the data, thus blocking the network effects we desperately need. Enabling regulation exists for health care and finance, but not yet for energy.

Free the smart-meter data!

Most ratepayers in the US have a smart meter generating real-time data about their power usage, which could theoretically be used to reduce consumption and save money, but in most cases, utilities have locked up the information in inaccessible formats. Michael Murray, leader of business coalition Mission:data, describes the potential value of smart meter data and the group’s ongoing efforts to pry it from utilities.

I live in the southwest US. All this talk of the #heatdome2023 and looming consequences of #ClimateChange brings up an itching fear in the back of my brain:

Our #homes and #communities are not resilient. If the power goes out during a heatwave (which is a risk of the heatwave itself), people will die.

We have designed our lives around comfort and neglected protection.

We need to recognize collectively that #passivehouse style design and #distributedenergy along with meticulous #emergencypreparedness is urgently needed. Additionally, we need to work to reduce #UrbanHeatIsland effects which exacerbate this.
