Cargo Bike Chaos at the Bristol Disaster Relief Trials

Part emergency drill, part race, part community celebration, the Disaster Relief Trials is a cargo bike competition designed to simulate a disaster relief supply run where riders navigate a course simulating post-disaster conditions. In September 2025, the first DRT out of the US came to Bristol.

Disaster Relief Trials Bristol

The Disaster Relief Trials in Bristol took place recently, and Sentient Works' Tullen Dawson was there to report on the aftermath of the environmental collapse. Read on for his account with photos by @tadjiunn and @twoevstops... The year is 2035. Global warming has pushed the world into its most catastrophic crisis yet. Rising sea levels have submerged coastlines, and extreme weather patterns have brought floods and storms to cities everywhere... Bristol, once a vibrant and thriving community, has become a disaster zone. Inundated by relentless rains and rising waters, the city’s infrastructure is crumbling. Roads are washed out, traditional transport…

I survived the Bristol disaster relief trial yesterday on an acoustic cargo bike, including the medical task (bandage), the mechanical task (puncture), brought 2x14kg sandbags, radio equipment and 25l of water collected from the river after some offroading. #cargobike #disasterrelieftrials

I survived the Bristol disaster relief trial yesterday on an acoustic cargo bike, including the medical task (bandage up a wound), the mechanical task (simulated puncture), and successfully brought back 2x14kg sandbags to shore up the base, radio equipment and 25l of water collected from the river after some offroading.

I navigated ~30miles over 5 checkpoints spread over Bristol from a paper map (no electricity, mobile or GPS) and was not fast but not last.

I did fail to keep the medical samples (3 bread sticks simulating test tubes) in one piece.

...oh, and at the finish, i carried it all over a 1 m barrier

..."I won’t lie: crossing the creek/river, carrying our bikes, on a make-shift foot bridge neighbors pieced together, was dodgy at best. I decided then and there that I would not take the bike across on the way back. We’d hike the two miles up the road...." #NCSTRONG #NCwx #Helene #DisasterReliefTrials

Buncombe County Government taking volunteers to do health/wellness checks on lower-risk households, and *THIS* tidbit from their briefing this morning:

"...we're assisting with locating loved ones from outside the community... we have narrowed down list to 150, people who are elderly... medical needs..

because gas is an issue, and because this is Asheville, we have a bike brigade going out to knock on doors of people who might need help..."

Impressed, real life implementation of Disaster Relief Trials right now in Swannanoa, North Carolina (by K4SWL who is bicycle mobile). Using his bicycle to get around to check out what's going on/etc. to avoid burning gasoline (no gasoline available at most gas stations in WNC, no resupply). #DisasterReliefTrials #bicycles #disasters #BikeTooter
