There’s a new kid in town

Nach einer halben Ewigkeit habe ich mir tatsächlich mal wieder einen Desktop-Rechner gekauft und das fühlt sich aktuell auch ganz gut an. Ich sitze ja doch in der Regel am Schreibtisch vor meinem sehr schicken, sehr großen (breiten) Bildschirm.

Und da ich erstens geizig bin und zweitens wenigstens ein bisschen nachhaltiger unterwegs sein will, ist es ein Gebrauchtgerät geworden. Natürlich sorgfältig aufbereitet – man nennt das heutzutage ja „refurbished“. Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass die dabei das Ding nicht geschrumpft haben und es schon immer so klein ist. Hat auch ein „Tiny“ im Namen und das mit gutem Recht.

Obwohl es ein Gebrauchtgerät ist, konnte ich mir die Ausstattung, d.h. die Innereien recht frei zusammenstellen und so habe ich das tiny Mini-Ding an manchen Stellen etwas peppiger aufgebrezelt.

Gestern kam es an und ich habe dann nur kurz ein anderes Betriebssystem drauf gemacht und hie und da was angepasst. Die ganze Peripherie lief direkt perfekt und so konnte ich rund zwei Stunden nach dem Auspacken auch schon den monatlichen Hangout meiner AG OpenSource bei D64 darüber laufen lassen. So macht das Freude.

In den nächsten Tagen darf die DenkStation jetzt zeigen, was sie kann.

related - This is why there should be a grid view for chrome browser bookmarks. Even on a huge screen, a grid layout is a better launcher than a list.

The "favorites new tab page" extension is essentially the solution. Only problem is I/we can't seem to reach the developer of the extension. If you haven't tried favorites new tab page, give it a go. It's really nice.

I am unaffiliated with this extension but I rely on it as a launcher for my browser bookmarks. It's been very reliable for the past year and I wish I had known about it 5 years ago when it was released.

If anyone can get in touch with the developer, please tell them to update it to manifest v3.

I hope this message finds you well. I’ve been using your "Favorites New Tab Page" extension and have found it incredibly useful. It has significantly improved my browsing experience, and I would be disappointed to see it go.

Recently, I noticed a notice from Google stating that the extension may no longer be supported soon due to not following the best practices for Chrome extensions. As a dedicated user, I wanted to reach out to express my appreciation for your work and to inquire if there are any plans to update the extension to meet the current Chrome Web Store guidelines.

If there's anything I or the community can do to support this process, please let me know. I believe there are many users like myself who would love to see this extension continue to be available.

I mentioned in a post a few days ago (so… like… 100 posts back… I post waaaaaaay to much) that I am going to set up a new office space in one of the kids’ rooms. I am going to put together a new desk and a work-from-home workstation to use with my work-issued laptop. I was also thinking of putting a personal machine in there just for schnitzengiggles. I figured it would be a windows box and I could put some games on it or something. Mostly it would just be used for youtube, but who knows.

Today I had a crazy idea.

If I am going to have a desktop machine that isn’t a Mac (I am 100% a Mac user outside of work)… why not a duel boot with a version of Linux? Debian or Ubuntu? Something like that?

That could be fun, right? Get a little swagger for my Computer Science degree going? Yeah… we’ll have to look into that more once everything is setup and running.

I currently own an M1 MacBook but I’m interested in using a desktop Linux machine. I have little funding I could allocate to such an endeavor. Are there any dirt cheap little guys? Looking for maybe.. $50? Maybe that’s just not enough. Would be mostly a writing computer, maybe some light internet browsing. Nothing crazy. \_(ツ)_/¯

Need help deciding on specs for a new desktop PC.
Been a very long time since I bought one so I'm hoping someone can recommend what I need.

Windows OS, and I'm using Adobe Indesign and Photoshop. (Can't change that for boring non negotiable reasons)

- what processor ?
- what size SSD for operating system ? (I've got a hard drive for storage already)
- amount of RAM ?
