Google's heavy-handed ad pushes Chromebook Plus as an alternative to a Windows 10 laptop - but I don't think it's fair

As Windows 10 support ends, Google thinks you should switch to ChromeOS

TechRadar
Chrome OS Flex as a Windows replacement

Windows is becoming less favorable as an OS daily driver for many users. Windows has recently faced various issues, ranging from complete system crashes to invasive privacy leaks. As users look for alternatives, many wonder if Chrome OS Flex is powerful enough to be a viable alternative.

Dear Favorites New Tab Page Developers:

I hope this message finds you well. I’ve been using your "Favorites New Tab Page" extension and have found it incredibly useful. It has significantly improved my browsing experience, and I would be disappointed to see it go.

Recently, I noticed a notice from Google stating that the extension may no longer be supported soon due to not following the best practices for Chrome extensions. As a dedicated user, I wanted to reach out to express my appreciation for your work and to inquire if there are any plans to update the extension to meet the current Chrome Web Store guidelines.

If there's anything I or the community can do to support this process, please let me know. I believe there are many users like myself who would love to see this extension continue to be available.

Thank you for your time and for creating such a fantastic tool.

Best regards,
Mark

any other fans of this extension?

no import required - uses your existing chrome bookmarks, but with a nice full screen grid view of browser bookmarks with favicons automatically applied - makes nice internet launcher, including 3x3 app folders, similar to iOS / android home screen. Supports drag and drop. changes are synced to Google cloud since its a launcher gui for your existing bookmarks

Uses doc mode layout (left to right, top to bottom) for anyone familiar with the physics of the iPad / iPhone home screen

what do you think?

favorites new tab page - Does anyone else think this extension is amazing?

it feels native. its fast. you don't have to import anything because it uses your existing bookmarks, but in a much more user friendly grid view. I wish I had known about this extension when I got my chromebook a few years ago. but i never stumbled upon it until recently, and I just feel like I want to spread the word about it. I feel like, as chromeOS is somewhat lacking in the "launcher" department, I feel like this is just, amazing. I don't know why its not at the top of the charts and why its not a featured extension.

here's the link:

PS. if you want a dark background, here's what you do

right click > settings > theme and choose a theme where the background is black (High Contrast Colorful)

under theme, click "Background", click "color" and use the color picker to select black, so its easier on the eyes, giving it a nice night mode / dark theme.

Chatgpt response:

"It does seem like ChromeOS is constrained in a way that prevents it from reaching its full potential as a versatile operating system. While Google's emphasis on a lightweight, secure, and user-friendly environment is commendable, it does limit the kind of software that can be run, especially compared to Windows.

Here are some points that highlight your concerns:

1. **Limited Software Installation**: ChromeOS primarily supports web and Android apps, which can feel limiting compared to the vast array of desktop applications available on Windows. Opening up ChromeOS to support more robust software could indeed make it a more compelling option for many users.

2. **Monopoly Issues**: Google’s control over ChromeOS and the built-in Chrome browser does raise questions about monopolistic practices. Allowing more browser choices and making it easier to install alternative software could address these concerns.

3. **Market Share and Innovation**: Google might be intentionally keeping ChromeOS in a niche market to avoid antitrust scrutiny. However, the lack of aggressive market expansion and innovation leaves many potential improvements untapped, frustrating users who see the potential in Chromebooks.

4. **Past Innovation**: Google’s early 2000s era was marked by significant innovations like Gmail and Android. There’s a sense that this spirit of bold, user-driven development has diminished.

For those looking to push the boundaries of their Chromebooks, projects like **Crostini** (Linux on ChromeOS) and **Lacros** (a new Chrome browser architecture) offer some potential. However, they still don’t fully bridge the gap between ChromeOS and a more open operating system like Windows or traditional Linux distributions.

Your frustrations resonate with many who see the potential for Chromebooks to be more than just "wifi typewriters." It would indeed be exciting to see Google rekindle its innovative spirit and bring more flexibility and power to ChromeOS."

xpost - LaCrOs on chromeOS - multiple chrome profiles -

"I have been using the LaCrOs version of Chrome for more than a year, and I was devastated when I read Robby’s post about Google shutting down the LaCrOs experiment in the near future. “Devastated” might seem like a bit of an overstatement, but let me explain.

Don’t take away my profiles!
The most valuable feature of LaCrOs was the ability to create multiple Chrome profiles. To those of you who use a Mac or PC as your primary device, [chrome profiles have always been available.]"

For some reason, chrome profiles were not available on chromeOS until the lacros flag was made available in 2022. this greatly increases the utility of chromebook by allowing users to seamlessly switch between chrome profiles as can be done on windows and mac.

I found a Lacros replacement to keep Chrome account switching

"Google should bring account switching to the ChromeOS browser" - i completely and wholeheartedly agree.

this part i take issue with though:

"I understand that ChromeOS allows for multiple accounts at the OS level, but switching back and forth between two different users isn’t a great workflow at all. Being able to switch instances of Chrome makes far more sense."

the reason i take issue with it is because, i feel that multiple accounts at the OS level is very important. in fact, that's why i chose a pixel phone. both samsung and apple lack multiple users, something that sets pixel apart. multiple users offers complete data segregation. it makes sense for users with a userA + userB setup where one may want to avoid logging into userB when inside userA and avoid logging into userA when in userB. that being said, the ability to do account switching in the chrome browser is still very important because there are some setups where userC, userD, and userE are all meant to be logged in inside the userA umbrella, and so, that's why lacros was nice.

what i'm trying to say is, both functions are equally important. multiple users is important, but an account switcher within a single user is also important. so, yes, please bring account switching the the chrome browser in chromeOS, but not at the expense of multiple users at the OS level.

Lacros is gone, so Google should bring account switching to the ChromeOS browser

A few weeks ago, the disappointing news came down that Google was abandoning the experimental Lacros browser for ChromeOS and Chromebooks across the board. Never was this new, detached version of Chrome ever made completely official or taken out of experimental status, but that didn't stop many users from using it daily and beginning to...
