Six decades after the federal government ordered Concordia Parish to desegregate its schools, the district remains racially divided. Black students make up more than 92% of Ferriday High School, while 15 minutes away, Vidalia High is 62% white. Yet state and local officials say it’s time to free Concordia Parish and other districts from court-ordered desegregation orders dating back decades. In a stunning shift that reverses decades of policy, they have allies in the federal government. The Trump administration has vowed to lift more desegregation plans from the 1960s. Civil rights activists say it would leave families with little recourse when they face discrimination.

The Trump administration’s effort to overturn decades-old school desegregation orders is facing pushback from a federal judge in Louisiana. After the judge refused to close the books on a desegregation case dating back to the 1960s, the Concordia Parish school system and the state on Tuesday filed an appeal of a decision. The case offers the first major test of the government’s attempt to quickly end some of the long-running cases. Louisiana state officials say the cases are outdated. Some families say the court orders are still needed to improve education at the area’s mostly Black schools.

#Trump’s #DOJ & #Louisiana’s AG have worked to end older #desegregation cases they claim are no longer needed. In April, they lifted a 1965 order in LA’s #PlaqueminesParish.
#Concordia’s filing says the orders interfere with local control.
In July, the #NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed a brief arguing that there is “significant evidence that vestiges of #discrimination continue to harm #Black #students” in Concordia’s #schools.
