dear friends on large #instance s, please consider #migrating to smaller instances and spreading out in the #fediverse. This will greatly help strengthen you and the fediverse against;

- #survaillence #capitalism: big tech has its eyes on instances with large users, or they want to create large instances themselves. if they dominate these, they will have power over the majority and transform the platform from what you have to what they want.

- fediverse collapse: if something goes wrong and your instance is blocked or down, you will have less effect on the whole of the fediverse.

- #elbow-contact: smaller instances open way for more "human" #interaction. you will have chance to create real relationships with your instance peers and admins, opening way for a real community.

- #costs: large instances have heavier burden for those running them. chose a small instance, maybe even one that is running on a home server. spread the cost of running instances across the fediverse.

- #authority: large instances have risk on being surveyed by authorities. divide, and dont let anyone conquer you. i live in a country where the #government blocks social media in any civil movement. for now, they dont care about the fediverse but if we expand, they will first take action to block large instances.

- #monopoly: when large instances dominate, they will want to impose power over the protocol(s). eventually, this may lead back to 'lock-in social media platforms' derived from the fediverse.

- social #defragmentation: every instance has its set of moral, social, ethical standards and rules. these may look fine in the beginning but when an instance gets too large, these rules may change in ways that start to impact your freedom. i know you can always migrate later, but why give an instance such power in the first place...
